Iran and New Zealand face off at World Cup 2026 amid off-field tensions and contrasting quests
A World Cup clash between Iran and New Zealand at Los Angeles Stadium is overshadowed by geopolitical tensions and visa disruptions for the Iranian squad, while both teams chase elusive group-stage success.
Iran and New Zealand meet in a Group G encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with kick-off at 6pm local time in Los Angeles. The buildup has been dominated by the conflict between Iran, the United States and Israel, raising questions over whether the Asian nation would be allowed to play in the US, as well as ongoing visa issues for players and staff. The Iranian team has been based across the border in Tijuana, Mexico, during the group stage.
Iran are appearing at their seventh World Cup but have never advanced beyond the group stage, a record surpassed only by Scotland. They arrive with strong form, having lost just once in 16 qualifiers and won three recent warm-up matches comfortably. New Zealand, the lowest-ranked side at No 85, are competing at just their third finals and are still searching for a first win. They held Italy to a 1-1 draw in 2010 and qualified for 2026 by winning all five Oceania matches with 29 goals scored and just one conceded. Group G also includes Belgium and Egypt.
