Portugal and Spain meet in World Cup last 16 as Ronaldo faces Yamal's rising Spain
Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal take on Lamine Yamal's Spain in a heavyweight round-of-16 clash at the 2026 World Cup in Arlington, Texas, with one title contender set to exit early.
A heavyweight clash
Portugal and Spain, two neighbours and pre-tournament favourites, meet in the World Cup round of 16 on Monday evening in Arlington. The match at AT&T Stadium kicks off at 21:00 local time and is broadcast in France on beIN SPORTS 1 and M6. The winner will advance to a quarter-final, while the loser heads home.
Contrasting paths to Dallas
Portugal reached this stage after a dramatic 2-1 win over Croatia in the round of 32. Cristiano Ronaldo equalised with his first knockout goal of the tournament before Gonçalo Ramos scored a late winner. Spain, the reigning European champions, cruised past Austria 3-0 with goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and a dominant display from Lamine Yamal. Spain have yet to concede a goal in four matches at this World Cup.
Ronaldo's last dance
At 41, Ronaldo is playing his final World Cup. He has scored three goals in four games and remains a central figure for Portugal. Spanish media have shown growing respect for the former Real Madrid star.
Some Barcelona fans may see him as arrogant and full of himself, comparing him to Messi, but in Spain, his professionalism is not up for debate.
Barcelona will always view Messi and Ronaldo differently. But in the end, the latter is seen as a formidable rival with an exceptional career, especially in terms of longevity. Over time, Cristiano has come to be perceived with much more respect.
Spain's defensive wall
Spain's midfield, anchored by Rodri and Pedri, has been the foundation of their campaign. The team has not conceded a goal in 360 minutes of football, a record that will be tested by Portugal's attack. Coach Luis de la Fuente is expected to field a similar lineup to the one that beat Austria, with Unai Simón in goal and Pau Cubarsí and Aymeric Laporte in central defence.
Later on Monday
After the Iberian derby, the United States face Belgium in Seattle at 2:00 a.m. Paris time. The hosts will be without striker Folarin Balogun, who is suspended after a red card against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Belgium needed extra time to beat Senegal 3-2 in the previous round.
