Thunderstorms and hail hit Poland on Sunday, IMGW warns of flooding and gusts up to 70 km/h
Severe thunderstorms brought hail, heavy rain, and strong winds to multiple regions of Poland on Sunday, 7 June 2026, with the weather service warning of potential flash flooding.
Storms arrive across the country
Thunderstorms were reported across a wide swath of Poland on Sunday, including Pomorze Zachodnie, Warmia i Mazury, Pomorze, Ziemia Lubuska, Mazowsze, Wielkopolska, and Śląsk. The storms delivered heavy rain, strong winds, and localised hail. The Instytut Meteorologii i Gospodarki Wodnej (IMGW) issued warnings ahead of the severe weather.
Hail reported in Pomorze
Hail was observed in the Pomorze region, with ice pellets falling in the village of Sadlinki in Kwidzyn county. The Sieć Obserwatorów Burz published photographs of the hail on social media. Hail also fell in the nearby village of Karpiny, in the same county.
Official warnings and risks
IMGW issued a first-level alert for Sunday, 7 June, in effect until 20:00. The alert warned of heavy rainfall, localised hail, and wind gusts reaching up to 70 km/h. In areas where the heaviest rain was forecast, authorities cautioned that water levels could rise rapidly, leading to flash flooding and potential property damage. The meteorological service noted that the hazardous conditions could pose a threat to life and health.
Advice for residents and drivers
Emergency services urged residents to exercise caution, secure loose objects on balconies and properties, and prepare for difficult driving conditions. Motorists were advised to expect reduced visibility and slippery road surfaces.
A pause in the drought
Forecasters noted that the expected rainfall would temporarily slow the further development of the hydrological drought. The unsettled weather, driven by arriving atmospheric fronts, was expected to persist into the middle of the following week.
