
Google commits €13 billion to build Finnish AI data centres across four sites
Alphabet will invest at least €13 billion across four Finnish municipalities during 2027 and 2028, funding data centre facilities, battery storage, and long-term clean power contracts.
Expansion across four municipalities
Alphabet announced on 9 September 2026 that it will invest at least 13 billion euros (15.1 billion dollars) in artificial intelligence digital infrastructure in Finland. The capital program, scheduled for 2027 and 2028, represents the company's single largest investment in Europe. The funding will build out digital capacity across four municipalities: the existing data centre site in Hamina, which Google has operated since 2009, and three new locations in Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala. The infrastructure is designed to power computational workloads for AI systems, including Google's Gemini models, alongside core consumer services such as Google Search, Maps, and YouTube.
The new digital infrastructure will serve as building blocks for Finnish and broader European digital readiness, innovation, and AI development.
Power agreements and energy infrastructure
To power the facilities, Google structured long-term energy procurement contracts directly tied to Finnish generation assets. The company entered a 22-year power purchase agreement with utility Fortum to support an operational life extension for the Loviisa nuclear plant, a facility that currently supplies approximately 10% of Finland's electricity. In addition, Google contracted 629 megawatts of new-to-grid onshore wind capacity through developers Valorem and Suomen Hyötytuuli. The infrastructure plan also incorporates a 94-megawatt battery storage system near Kajaani, scheduled to begin operating in late 2027.

The self-generation and storage strategy follows growing electricity constraints across Nordic power systems, where grid operators have faced surging demand from hyperscale tech operators. Denmark previously paused new data centre connections after determining its grid could not absorb additional load without strains. While Google specified its contracted generation additions, the company did not disclose the total peak power demand that the four Finnish data centre sites will consume once fully operational.

Domestic economic impact and employment
Finnish economic projections released with the plan estimate that the construction phase in 2027 and 2028 will contribute an average of 3.6 billion euros (3.6 billion dollars) annually to Finland's gross domestic product. The construction program is expected to support more than 37,000 jobs across the country, including roughly 16,000 direct construction roles. Once the sites enter active service, Google projects the data centres will support 7,000 permanent jobs with average compensation levels 24% above the Finnish median wage.
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo welcomed the commercial commitment following the announcement.
The value of the data economy extends far beyond direct investment into spurring innovation, research, and development.
Community and environmental allocations
Beyond data processing facilities and generation hardware, the investment package directs capital into community and ecological programs in the host regions. Google established dedicated nature and community funds to finance local biodiversity conservation, scientific research, educational programs, and technical workforce development across the four regional hubs.
