Opening singles split the tie in Halle

Germany and Croatia ended the opening day of their Davis Cup second-round tie level at 1-1 on Saturday at the Heristo-Arena in Halle, Westfalen. Alexander Zverev gave the German Tennis Federation (DTB) team an initial 1-0 lead by defeating Matej Dodig 6:4, 7:6 with a 7:3 tiebreak score in the first rubber. The 29-year-old world number two broke serve early to take a 2:1 lead in the first set but faced persistent resistance from the 21-year-old Croatian, who is ranked 171st in the world. Croatia leveled the score in the second singles rubber when Croatian number one Dino Prizmic defeated Daniel Altmaier 4:6, 3:6. Altmaier struggled throughout the match, leaving the home crowd quieted and shifting the pressure onto Sunday's decisive fixtures.

Zverev pushes through post-New York fatigue

Zverev competed in Halle six days after winning the US Open in New York, bypassing a rest period before his scheduled appearance at the Laver Cup in London. After enduring late-night matches, short nights of sleep, and post-tournament obligations in the United States, Zverev noted that he preferred staying active over taking a two-week break. He is also pursuing the world number one ranking, an achievement no German player has reached since Boris Becker in 1991. Despite moments of fatigue and unforced errors in the second set, Zverev regained control in the tiebreak under the observation of his daughter and his partner Sophia Thomalla. Following the match, Zverev commended his opponent and projected that Dodig would soon reach the world top 20.

Zverev stated that his commitment to the tie reflects his goal of securing a Davis Cup title for Germany, which last lifted the trophy 33 years ago.

We as a German team will get older at some point. I believe that we have the chance this year and perhaps also for the next two or three years. And I want to use every chance to win the Davis Cup.

Decisive Sunday rubbers and finals qualification

The tie resumes on Sunday with three matches scheduled to determine which nation qualifies for the tournament's final stage. Play starts at 12:00 with the doubles rubber, where US Open finalists Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz face Olympic champions Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic. Croatia is competing without former US Open champion Marin Cilic, who is absent due to injury. Following the doubles match, Zverev will play Prizmic in the first reverse singles rubber, followed by Altmaier facing Dodig. German team captain Michael Kohlmann has the option to alter the lineup and nominate Yannick Hanfmann in place of Altmaier.

Three victories in the best-of-five format are required to secure a place in the Davis Cup Final 8 in Bologna, Italy, scheduled for 24 to 29 November. Germany currently ranks third in the Davis Cup world rankings behind the United States and Italy, having lost in the semifinals to Spain during the previous year's finals.
