Delogu explained to reporters that he was returning home and getting ready to close a residential door that had been left open when an unfamiliar individual in civilian clothes demanded that it remain open. Delogu said he refused the demand because he had previously received threats and did not recognize the person.

Delogu stated that the three plainclothes officers failed to display their official police badges upon request.
