Ugandan football captain David Owori dies after stone attack in Kampala

The attack

David Owori, captain of SC Villa, Uganda's most decorated club with 17 league titles, was attacked near his home in a suburb of Kampala on Tuesday evening. According to police spokesperson Racheal Kawala, the 28-year-old was critically injured by unidentified assailants. SC Villa spokesperson Asan Kasingye said Owori was ambushed by criminals around 8 PM as he was returning home, and witnesses told the BBC that the attackers struck him repeatedly with paving stones before stealing his phone and other valuables and fleeing, leaving him unconscious on the street. Reuters reports his age as 28, while most other sources, including SC Villa and the Ugandan football federation, give his age as 27.

Passers-by took Owori to a nearby hospital, and he was later transferred to Case Clinic, a private facility in Kampala. Despite emergency surgery, he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, 5 August. He had last played for SC Villa on Saturday, 1 August.

Tributes and mourning

Hundreds of people attended a memorial mass in a church in Kampala on Thursday to pay their respects. SC Villa issued a statement deeply lamenting the death of its captain and urging security agencies to urgently pursue, arrest and bring the perpetrators to justice.

We have lost much more than a footballer. We have lost a leader, a brother and a friend.

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) paid tribute through its president, Moses Hassim Magogo, who called Owori a leader and a source of inspiration for an entire generation.

David was not just a footballer. He was both a leader and an inspiration to a generation. As Captain of SC Villa, he led with courage, humility and passion. In the Uganda Cranes jersey, he carried the hopes of a nation.

The Ugandan Parliament held a minute of silence on Wednesday in Owori's honour. Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa called for thorough investigations, justice for the family, and a government review of the broader security problems affecting many Ugandans.

Career and playing background

Owori, a versatile player who featured as a midfielder and right-back, returned to SC Villa in early 2023 for a second stint after two years in Europe, where he played for Spain's Vélez CF (fourth division) and Sweden's Utsiktens BK. He was widely credited with contributing to SC Villa's 2024 league title, the club's first championship in 20 years. He had earned several call-ups to the Uganda national team, the Cranes, and had played for the country's junior teams.

Pattern of violence against sports figures

Owori's death follows the killing of another prominent Ugandan athlete in June. Rugby international Sydney Gongodyo was fatally attacked by a mob in Kampala after being falsely accused of theft, and at least four people have been charged with his murder. The state-run National Council of Sports Uganda said Ugandan sport had been hit with many such tragedies recently and called for justice and a lasting solution. The deaths have prompted public anger on social media over rampant crime in the capital, with many Ugandans condemning what they describe as authorities' inability to tackle insecurity.
