For many tourists, the station serves as the starting point for exploring the western part of the city. The square is typically heavily frequented even late at night, which is when the fatal shots were fired.
Rising gun violence in Berlin
The fatal shooting is the latest in a series of firearms incidents in the German capital. Berlin police registered 1,119 cases of firearms use in 2025, a 68% increase compared to 2024. In more than 500 of those cases, shots were actually fired. Berlin's police president, Barbara Slowik Meisel, addressed the trend in February before the interior committee of the Abgeordnetenhaus, Berlin's state parliament.
Disputes that used to be settled with fists are today perhaps more likely settled with firearms.
In response to the rising gun violence, Berlin's Landeskriminalamt established a special unit called "Ferrum" in the autumn of 2025 to address the increasing frequency of firearms-related offenses across the city.

A weekend of shootings
The Hardenbergplatz shooting was not the only firearms incident in Berlin over the weekend. Early on Sunday morning, hours before the fatal incident at Hardenbergplatz, unknown persons shot at the window of a bar in the Neukölln district. A hair salon in Marzahn-Hellersdorf was also shot at, and police found at least one bullet hole at a neighboring nightclub. Police said it was unclear which establishment was the primary target of the attack.
On the Friday evening before the Hardenbergplatz shooting, an unknown perpetrator fired at a 22-year-old man in the Graefekiez area of Kreuzberg. The victim underwent emergency surgery and survived. The previous weekend, a 38-year-old man was shot and injured in the Schöneberg district. The incidents form part of what police describe as a sharp increase in the use of firearms in the capital. The Mordkommission's investigation into the Hardenbergplatz case is ongoing.
