Seven-year-old boy in France fatally stabs aunt during family dispute southeast of Paris
A seven-year-old boy in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés fatally stabbed his 49-year-old aunt in the throat while intervening in an overnight argument between his mother and the victim.
Fatal altercation in apartment
In the early hours of Friday, 18 September 2026, a domestic dispute in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, a suburb southeast of Paris, ended with the fatal stabbing of a 49-year-old woman. The victim had been staying overnight at the apartment of her 34-year-old sister. Shortly after 4:00 AM, an argument erupted between the two sisters over a dispute involving hair straightening. As the conflict escalated, the resident's seven-year-old son grabbed a knife that had been kept in the bathroom and struck his aunt in the throat. When officers later questioned him, the child stated that he acted to defend his mother, saying he did not want her or himself to go to prison.
Emergency response in the street
Following the stabbing, the 49-year-old victim managed to leave the apartment to seek assistance, leaving blood traces along the building's hallway floor and walls. She fled into the street, where multiple bystanders attempted to provide first aid. Among those assisting were an off-duty nurse, a neighboring resident, and two taxi drivers. A man who was approached by the victim contacted police at approximately 4:30 AM. Emergency services responded to the scene shortly afterward, but the victim succumbed to the severe neck wound in the street at around 5:15 AM.

Immediate aftermath and police response
Police arriving at the residence located the 34-year-old mother and her seven-year-old son in a state of shock, both carrying blood marks on their forearms. The mother told responding officers that her son had delivered the knife blow solely to protect her during the argument. Before transport, the child's father arrived at the scene to comfort his son, telling him that it was an accident and that he had attempted to protect his mother. Emergency workers then transported both the mother and the child to a hospital for evaluation.
Legal framework and community support
The Créteil prosecutor's office declined to release preliminary investigative findings, indicating that no official communication would be provided before the start of next week to safeguard ongoing inquiries. Under French penal law, the seven-year-old child cannot face criminal prosecution or judicial charges. French legislation establishes a strict presumption of lack of discernment for minors under 13 years of age, which precludes criminal liability regardless of the gravity of the incident.
Municipal officials in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés responded to the fatal incident by establishing psychological support units for witnesses and neighbors in the district. A second psychological support service was set up at the elementary school where the seven-year-old boy is enrolled. The mayor of Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, Pierre-Michel Delecroix, addressed the local reaction while investigators continued work at the scene.
People are stunned, of course. But for now, we do not know exactly what happened and the investigation will tell. Family tragedies like that, they can happen anywhere. We are in shock like everyone else.
