Fatal crash in Donegal

A motorcyclist in his 60s was killed in a collision with a car on the N56 at Termon, Co Donegal, at approximately 4.30pm on Friday 7 August. The motorcyclist received treatment at the scene but was pronounced dead there. His body was taken to the mortuary at Letterkenny University Hospital, with a postmortem set to take place. The driver of the car, a woman in her 30s, was brought to Letterkenny University Hospital with non-serious injuries. The N56 was closed on Friday evening for a forensic examination by Garda technical staff, with local diversions in place. Gardaí asked witnesses, anyone with dashcam footage, and drivers on the N56 between the Lagoon Restaurant & Guesthouse and Creeslough in the hour surrounding the crash to come forward.

Hit-and-run in Cork

Separately, Gardaí issued an appeal after a "serious" hit-and-run in Blackpool, Co Cork. A grey Skoda estate car left the scene of a collision near the Thomas David Bridge junction on the North City Link Road at about 5.30pm on Friday. A moped rider was brought to Cork University Hospital with serious injuries. The force is seeking witnesses or video footage from vehicles near the scene at the time.

Motorcycle crash in Fermanagh

In Northern Ireland, the PSNI received a report of a single-vehicle collision in the Lisnaskea Road area of Lisnaskea, Co Fermanagh, involving a black Suzuki motorcycle at approximately 9.05pm on Friday 7 August. The rider, a man in his 40s, was taken to hospital and remained in a critical condition. Police officers attended the scene alongside colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service. The PSNI appealed for information, dashcam or other video footage, asking the public to contact them on 101 quoting reference number 1518 07/08/26.

Saturday collisions

On Saturday 8 August, a three-car crash occurred at around 2.10pm in Lissacholly on the N3 Ballyshannon to Belleek Road in Co Donegal. A woman in her 20s was airlifted to Sligo University Hospital for treatment. A man in his 40s travelling in a separate vehicle and a woman in her 60s in a third vehicle were both treated at the scene as precautions. Gardaí appealed for witnesses and dashcam footage, asking anyone with information to contact Ballyshannon Garda Station on 071 985 8530 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.

Shortly after, at approximately 2.15pm, a two-vehicle collision occurred on the R406 at Barberstown, Straffan, Co Kildare. Three occupants of one car were hospitalised: a male and female, both in their late teens, taken to Tallaght University Hospital, and the male driver, aged in his 20s, taken to Connolly Hospital. The driver of the second car, a woman in her 50s, was also taken to Tallaght University Hospital. Gardaí appealed to road users in the Barberstown area between 2pm and 2.30pm with dashcam footage to contact Leixlip Garda Station on 01 666 7800.

Rising road death toll

The death of the motorcyclist in Donegal on Friday brought the number of people killed on Irish roads so far in 2026 to 112, representing 12 per cent more than the 99 who had died by 7 August 2025. A total of 16 motorcyclists have been killed in crashes this year.
