Christian Eriksen collapses on pitch again during Denmark friendly, is conscious and stable

The incident

Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during Denmark's international friendly against Ukraine at Nature Energy Park in Odense on Sunday. The 34-year-old midfielder clutched his chest with both hands and fell to the ground around the 64th or 65th minute of the match, depending on the source. Medical personnel rushed to his aid while players from both Denmark and Ukraine formed a protective ring around him, a scene reminiscent of the response to his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020.

Christian Eriksen is conscious and, under the circumstances, doing well.

The match, which Denmark were leading 2-1 through first-half goals from Patrick Dorgu and Joakim Maelhe, was abandoned. Eriksen was treated on the pitch and eventually walked to an ambulance himself before being taken to hospital for further examinations.

Medical response and condition

Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen told Danish media that Eriksen lost consciousness briefly but regained it very quickly. The doctor confirmed that the player's implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), fitted after his 2021 cardiac arrest, appeared to have functioned correctly.

Christian is doing well and walked from the field himself. As I see it, the pacemaker is working as it should. He was briefly gone, but very quickly regained consciousness, and we were quickly in contact with him.

Eriksen will undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident. The DBU stated it is in constant contact with the player and the hospital doctors. Eriksen himself asked the medical staff to tell his teammates that he was okay.

Echoes of Euro 2020

The collapse immediately evoked memories of June 2021, when Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark's opening European Championship group game against Finland in Copenhagen. His heart stopped for roughly five minutes, and he received life-saving CPR on the pitch before being fitted with an ICD. Italian football regulations subsequently prevented him from continuing his career at Inter Milan, but he resumed playing at Brentford in January 2022, just eight months after the incident. He later played for Manchester United from the 2022/23 season and is currently at Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg, which he joined in September 2025.

Match context

Neither Denmark nor Ukraine qualified for the 2026 World Cup. The friendly was a preparation match for both sides. Denmark were leading 2-1 when the game was stopped and subsequently called off. The stadium announcer, cited by Danish media, relayed that Eriksen was doing well under the circumstances.
