Closure details
From today, 20 July 2026, the core tunnel of the Stuttgart S-Bahn network is completely closed between Hauptbahnhof and Vaihingen. The shutdown will last eight weeks, until 12 September, making it the longest of the six consecutive summer closures that have become a regular feature for the region's commuters. The six affected underground stations, Hauptbahnhof (tief), Stadtmitte, Feuersee, Schwabstraße, Universität and Österfeld, will see no S-Bahn trains throughout this period. All S-Bahn services terminate at the above-ground platforms of the Hauptbahnhof, where the ongoing Stuttgart 21 construction site forces passengers to take significantly longer walking routes to reach buses and the U-Bahn. The extension from the usual six weeks to eight weeks is due to track renewal work in the turning loop near Schwabstraße station, which must be completed before the summer holidays and cannot run concurrently with the digitalisation and Stuttgart 21 connection works.
Replacement services
Deutsche Bahn has deployed replacement buses on the closed section between Hauptbahnhof and Vaihingen. The buses stop at every station along the core route that is normally served by the S-Bahn. They operate at a minimum frequency of every ten minutes, increasing to every five minutes during the morning and evening peak. For passengers needing to travel from the Hauptbahnhof to Vaihingen, an hourly replacement regional train service runs between Hauptbahnhof and Böblingen, with a stop at Vaihingen. On the outer branches of the S-Bahn network that remain open, trains are reduced to a half-hourly interval instead of the regular timetable. The changes affect approximately 350,000 daily passengers, who face longer journey times and the need to transfer to buses or regional trains.
Impact on regional and long-distance trains
The closure also has knock-on effects for regional and long-distance rail services because some above-ground tracks at Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof are reassigned to S-Bahn operations. Several ICE long-distance trains, such as the Dortmund–Munich and Frankfurt–Graz services, omit the Stuttgart stop entirely and instead call at Esslingen am Neckar or Vaihingen (Enz). Regional services are rerouted: the MEX 18 line from Tübingen to Osterburken runs directly from Esslingen to Ludwigsburg, bypassing Stuttgart. The MEX 17 line between Stuttgart and Pforzheim starts and ends mostly in Bietigheim-Bissingen, while the MEX 19 (Stuttgart–Gaildorf) and MEX 90 (Stuttgart–Schwäbisch Hall) lines largely begin and terminate in Winnenden. These adjustments are in place for the full eight-week duration of the S-Bahn tunnel closure.
Background and duration
The construction programme includes digitalisation of the Stuttgart rail node, integration of the new Stuttgart 21 infrastructure with the existing network, and the renewal of tracks in the Schwabstraße turning loop. The track work at Schwabstraße required an earlier start, pushing the total closure to eight weeks. The works are scheduled to conclude on 12 September 2026, after which normal S-Bahn operations are expected to resume. This is the sixth consecutive year that the core tunnel has been shut for several weeks during the summer, a pattern that has become a fixture of the region's transport calendar.
