Russian drones struck targets within two kilometres of the Polish border in the Volyn region on the morning of 13 September 2026. One drone struck the locomotive of a civilian passenger train travelling on the route between Kyiv and Warsaw. The Polish railway operator PKP Intercity stated that 206 passengers and crew members were on board at the time. An early warning system alerted rail workers before the strike occurred, preventing casualties among those aboard, though the incident caused a delay of 370 minutes at the border. Another drone struck and destroyed a truck parked near the Yahodyn-Dorohusk border crossing, approximately 800 metres from Polish territory. The strike set fire to a nearby petrol station and adjacent parked vehicles, producing a large plume of fire in the border area.

Border operations and Polish air defence

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine temporarily halted clearance operations at the Yahodyn checkpoint while personnel and cross-border travellers sheltered during the air alert. Polish Border Guard spokesperson Dariusz Sienicki stated that the crossing infrastructure remained undamaged and that traffic resumed normal flow following the alert. Polish Interior Ministry spokesperson Karolina Gałecka confirmed that no injuries occurred on the Polish side of the frontier. Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz reported that Polish radar systems tracked a dozen Russian jet-propelled Geran-5 drones operating over western Ukraine, noting impacts one kilometre and five kilometres from the border. The Polish Armed Forces Operational Command deployed combat aircraft to secure the border zone.

Kosiniak-Kamysz outlined the military posture along the frontier:

“Our airspace is protected by F-16s, helicopters and Saab early warning aircraft. There has been no violation of our border.”

Diplomatic reactions in Kyiv and Warsaw

Ukrainian officials condemned the cross-border strikes as a deliberate escalation targeting transport links between Ukraine and its Western allies. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha warned European Union and NATO members that Russian attacks were taking place within sight of allied territory. Sybiha demanded that Western governments implement an immediate total trade embargo, a full entry ban, and broader sanctions targeting the Russian military-industrial complex. Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated publicly that the operation represents an escalation by Vladimir Putin.

Sybiha addressed partner countries directly following the incident:

“The barbarian Russian attacks near the Ukrainian-Polish border in Yahodyn are not simply a continuation of strikes against Ukraine's state borders. This is Putin's terror knocking directly at the doors of the EU and NATO. The Russian barbarians are already at your door, dear partners.”

Nationwide barrage and Russian claims

The border strike occurred alongside a nationwide air offensive against Ukrainian territory during the overnight hours of 13 September 2026. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russian forces launched 453 aerial devices, including Shahed drones, jet-powered Gerbera drones, Parodiya decoys, and S8000 Banderol loitering munitions. Ukrainian air defences neutralized 409 of the incoming targets, though impacts were recorded at 13 distinct locations across the country and debris fell at seven others. In the southern city of Odesa, a missile strike on a 25-storey residential building killed two people. The Russian Ministry of Defence claimed responsibility for group strikes on Ukrainian logistics hubs, electrical substations in Odesa and Mykolaiv, and western rail infrastructure used for transporting European military equipment.
