Object resembling a drone found on Karwia beach, sappers and military services investigate
A passer-by came across an object about two metres long, partly buried in sand, on the beach in Karwia on 13 October. Sappers, military units and police counter-terrorism officers were sent to the site while investigators work out what it is.
A find on the beach
A passer-by found an object resembling a drone on the beach in Karwia, in Puck County of the Pomeranian Voivodeship, on 13 October. According to police, the report reached the duty officer at the Puck County Police Headquarters through the emergency notification centre at 18:20. Police spokeswoman Agnieszka Selewska said officers had been sent to the scene and that prosecutors and the relevant services had been informed. Officers secured the area and are working to establish the circumstances of the find. Selewska also spoke to Polish Radio about the case, according to the broadcaster's report.
RMF FM reported that the object is about two metres long. RMF24 added that it was partly buried in the sand when the walker came across it, and that the investigation was still working out whose the find is and how it reached the beach.
Services on site
RMF FM reported that sappers and the military had been notified, and that the Internal Security Agency (ABW) and the Military Counterintelligence Service (SKW) had been informed as well. Police counter-terrorism officers were also sent to the beach. The Military Gendarmerie's press spokesman told TVN24 that appropriate services had been dispatched to establish exactly what the found object is. Its origin and nature had not been confirmed at that stage.
Lieutenant Colonel Dariusz Rozkosz, the Military Gendarmerie spokesman, promised that the public would be told once the site was safe:
As soon as we are certain that it is safe to approach the object, we will certainly inform you.
Origin still open
Neither the Military Gendarmerie nor the police has confirmed the origin or nature of the object in the reports so far. The Military Gendarmerie's stated aim is to establish both. RMF FM reporter Krzysztof Zasada said that everything pointed to the object being a machine of the Polish military, but that the services and the army still had to confirm this. The reports do not name any unit or program linked to the object, and no official has attributed it to one.
What remains unknown
The reports do not say when the object reached the beach. They also do not say who owns it or whether it was in use before it was found. Police have said prosecutors were informed, but the sources do not describe any findings from that notification. Officials have not indicated when the next update will come, and the Military Gendarmerie has said it will only speak more once it is safe to approach the object.
