Impact and recovery in Suceava

The flight ended when the drone crashed in an agricultural cornfield near the village of Botoșenița Mare in neighbouring Suceava county. Ground reconnaissance conducted by Ministry of Internal Affairs teams located the wreckage alongside a small fire caused by the ground impact. The collision generated a crater measuring approximately 1 meter in diameter and 30 centimeters in depth. Ministry officials confirmed that no human casualties or structural damage occurred during the descent. A specialized pyrotechnic team from the Romanian Intelligence Service deployed to the impact site to inspect the debris and assess potential ordnance risks.

Prior incident in the border region

The event on 12 September follows a cross-border drone breach detected in the Moldavian border region four days earlier. On Tuesday, 8 September 2026, air defense radar identified an aerial target west of Chișinău at 16:33 before it penetrated Romanian airspace approximately 30 kilometers southeast of Iași at 16:37. That incident prompted the scramble of two Spanish Air and Space Force F-18 fighter jets stationed at the 57th Air Base Mihail Kogălniceanu under NATO Enhanced Air Policing duties. Successive civil defense alerts were issued across Iași, northern Vaslui, Neamț, Suceava, and Botoșani counties before the alert expired at 17:33. Moldovan authorities later confirmed at 18:30 that the target had crashed near Mihăilenii Vechi in the Râșcani district, roughly 25 kilometers east of the Romanian border, with subsequent investigations determining the object was not an ordinary reconnaissance craft.
