Polish prosecutors pursue aggravated murder charges after two found dead in Koszalin flat

Discovery at Wyspiańskiego Street

Police officers in Koszalin discovered the bodies of two individuals inside an apartment on Wyspiańskiego Street late on Tuesday evening, shortly before 22:00. Relatives had alerted law enforcement after failing to establish phone or in-person contact with 69-year-old Liliana L. and her 63-year-old partner Jerzy N. since Saturday afternoon. When patrol officers arrived at the address, their initial knocks and calls went unanswered, prompting them to summon the State Fire Service to assist with a forced entry. Before emergency crews breached the door, 53-year-old resident Ryszard L. unlocked the entrance and admitted the officers into the flat. Senior Aspirant Izabela Sreberska of the Koszalin Municipal Police described the initial intervention.

“Before the fire brigade undertook these actions, the police officers knocked once more and called for the door to be opened. Then a 53-year-old man opened it, let them inside upon seeing the police patrol, and indicated the place where the two bodies lay.”

Examination of the scene and victims

Upon entering the premises, officers found the bodies of both seniors bearing numerous incised and stab wounds inflicted with a sharp weapon. Local media reporting indicated that the suspect directed police toward the bathroom where the victims were located. The deceased were secured for forensic post-mortem examinations to determine the exact cause and timing of their deaths. Because contact with the victims had ceased on Saturday afternoon, investigators believe the bodies may have remained inside the apartment alongside the suspect for several days prior to discovery.

Legal proceedings and murder charges

The District Prosecutor's Office in Koszalin formally launched an investigation on Wednesday into double homicide committed with particular cruelty. Prosecutors issued a formal decision to present two charges of aggravated murder against 53-year-old Ryszard L., identified as the brother of the female victim. District prosecutor spokesperson Ewa Dziadczyk confirmed the legal measures taken by the investigative team.

“An investigation has been launched into a double homicide with particular cruelty. A decision has been issued to present charges to 53-year-old Ryszard L. On Thursday, procedural actions will be conducted with his participation.”

Suspect hospitalization and motive inquiries

Procedural steps and formal interrogations involving Ryszard L. were postponed because the suspect required immediate medical treatment. Authorities stated that the man suffered severe injuries during the incident, including a substantial hand wound that required surgical intervention at a local hospital. District prosecutor spokesperson Ewa Dziadczyk noted that any formal questioning remains contingent on the suspect's physical condition.

“Everything depends on the health condition of the detained person, because he is in the hospital and probably injured himself quite severely during this event.”

Investigators continue to examine potential motives, including unconfirmed reports regarding a domestic dispute surrounding the planned sale of the Wyspiańskiego Street property. Police technicians and forensic specialists have secured physical evidence across the apartment while awaiting the results of scheduled autopsies.
