Relatives had alerted law enforcement after failing to establish phone or in-person contact with 69-year-old Liliana L. and her 63-year-old partner Jerzy N. since Saturday afternoon. When patrol officers arrived at the address, their initial knocks and calls went unanswered, prompting them to summon the State Fire Service to assist with a forced entry. Before emergency crews breached the door, 53-year-old resident Ryszard L. unlocked the entrance and admitted the officers into the flat. Senior Aspirant Izabela Sreberska of the Koszalin Municipal Police described the initial intervention.

Before the fire brigade undertook these actions, the police officers knocked once more and called for the door to be opened. Then a 53-year-old man opened it, let them inside upon seeing the police patrol, and indicated the place where the two bodies lay.
