Derkach wins triple jump gold as Italy reaches six medals at European Athletics Championships

Derkach leads from first jump to gold

Dariya Derkach claimed gold in the women's triple jump at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, commanding the final from her opening attempt at the Alexander Stadium. The 33-year-old Italian opened with 14.53m to take an immediate lead she never relinquished, keeping her opponents at a comfortable distance throughout the competition. She had essentially secured the victory with that first jump before producing the decisive mark of 14.60m on her fourth attempt. That mark also stood as her personal best. The regularity of her series drew particular attention: she led from the very first measurement and extended her advantage when it mattered most, her performance controlled from the first to the last jump. The victory never appeared in doubt from the moment she registered her opening mark.

Belgium's Saliyya Guisse took silver, with her mark recorded as 14.47m in one report and 14.46m in another. Guisse had attempted to challenge the Italian but could not close the gap over the course of the final, with Derkach's opening jump alone exceeding the Belgian's best effort. Bulgaria's Aleksandra Nacheva completed the podium with 14.40m. Italy's second entrant in the final, Erika Giorgia Anoeta Saraceni, was eliminated after the first three jumps, cutting short her campaign in Birmingham. Saraceni nonetheless displayed significant potential despite the disappointment of her early exit.

Italy reaches six medals on day four

Derkach's gold arrived on the fourth day of competition at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham and brought Italy's total to six medals at these European Athletics Championships. It was the third Italian gold, joining those won by Nadia Battocletti and Leonardo Fabbri. The medal tally placed Italy behind Great Britain in the overall standings, with the two nations separated by the silver count: the British held three silvers to Italy's two. The six-medal haul across the first four days of competition reflected Italy's consistent presence on the podium in Birmingham, with the team adding another medal on the fourth day of competition.

Desalu and Dezza reach 200m final

In the sprint events, Fausto Desalu and Filippo Dezza both advanced to the 200m final. Desalu, the Olympic 4x100m champion from Tokyo, won the first semifinal in 20.07 seconds, recording the fastest time across all semifinals. Dezza, from Bergamo, finished third in the last semifinal with 20.35 seconds and earned his place in the final through repêchage. Both Italians will contest the final with medal ambitions, with Desalu carrying the fastest qualifying time into the race.

Pernici eyes 800m podium

Later in the programme, Francesco Pernici was set to contest the 800m final, targeting a place on the podium. The event remained to come at the time of reporting, with Pernici aiming to add to Italy's medal count in Birmingham.
