Real Madrid secures verbal deals for Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Konaté and Dumfries as Mourinho rebuilds
Real Madrid have reached verbal agreements with Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté and Denzel Dumfries, reshaping the squad for José Mourinho's return to the Bernabéu.
Mourinho's return triggers a summer overhaul
José Mourinho arrived at Valdebebas on 9 June, even before his official return was confirmed, and immediately set about reshaping a Real Madrid squad that ended last season without trophies. The Portuguese coach, who previously managed the club between 2010 and 2013, delivered a clear demand: experienced reinforcements in defence and midfield. Within days, the club moved to satisfy four specific requests, reaching verbal agreements with two defenders and two midfielders, though none of the deals will be officially confirmed until after the World Cup.

Defence rebuilt: Konaté, Dumfries and now Cucurella
Florentino Pérez, re-elected as club president, had already pledged during his campaign to sign French centre-back Ibrahima Konaté on a free transfer from Liverpool and Dutch right-back Denzel Dumfries for around €20 million from Inter Milan. Those two deals were confirmed by the president and will add physicality and international experience to the back line. The third defensive piece, however, was not part of the original plan. A serious injury to Ferland Mendy left Mourinho unconvinced by the remaining left-back options, Fran García and Álvaro Carreras, and he pushed urgently for a proven name. Marc Cucurella soon became the chosen target.
Bernardo Silva picks Madrid over Atlético and Barcelona
Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva, 31, will join on a free transfer after his Manchester City contract expires. He had been in talks with both Atlético de Madrid and Barcelona, and the rojiblanco club was understood to have made significant progress. Mourinho's arrival changed everything. The coach wanted a midfielder with top-level experience, ball retention and defensive balance to organise the team from deep, and the Portuguese international fit that profile precisely. The club worked quickly to close the deal, which by 14 June was considered finalised.
Cucurella: the surprise left-back deal
The most unexpected move of the window came on Saturday when Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that Real Madrid had reached a verbal agreement with Chelsea and Marc Cucurella. The Spanish international, 27, is valued at around €50 million and will sign after Spain's World Cup campaign ends. Cucurella had been on the radar of both Atlético and Barcelona, and the player himself had been non-committal in public, but Mourinho's personal insistence and the weight of the Madrid project convinced him. For the left-back, who came through Barcelona's academy and has spent the last four seasons in London, a return to Spain was a priority.

What comes next after the World Cup
All four deals are subject to the formal signing of contracts and official announcements, which the club will not make until after the World Cup in North America concludes. The timing underlines a broader shift in Real Madrid's strategy: after years of pursuing young prospects, the club now targets experienced, battle-hardened professionals. With Konaté, Dumfries, Bernardo Silva and Cucurella, Mourinho gets the immediate quality he demanded, and Real Madrid aim to correct the missteps of the previous summer's transfer window.
