Courteney Cox and Johnny McDaid split amicably after 13-year relationship
Friends star Courteney Cox and Snow Patrol musician Johnny McDaid have ended their relationship, reports say. The split occurred months ago and was amicable, with both remaining devoted friends.
Courteney Cox and Johnny McDaid have separated after more than a decade together, according to multiple media reports. The American actress and the Northern Irish musician, who began dating in late 2013, are said to have parted ways at the end of 2025 in a completely amicable manner. Friends of the couple say they remain on excellent terms and simply reached a point where their lives were moving in different directions.
A decade-long relationship
They met through mutual friend Ed Sheeran, who brought McDaid to a party at Cox's house. Sheeran later recalled the introduction with warmth.
My housemate who I've lived with for a year, I introduced him to Courteney Cox. They started dating and [are] crazy about each other.
The relationship progressed quickly, with an engagement announced nine months later. That engagement was called off at the end of 2015, after which they spent six months apart. They reconciled in 2016 but never reset the engagement, continuing a long-term partnership while maintaining separate homes on different continents. Cox lives in Los Angeles; McDaid is based mainly in London.

The breaking point
According to a source quoted by several outlets, the separation happened without conflict. "Johnny speaks incredibly highly of Courteney. They had a very deep relationship and remain on very good terms. They simply reached a stage where they were leading different lives," the source said. No official statement has been issued by either Cox or McDaid, although German media noted that McDaid may already be at the start of a new relationship.
Their last public sighting together was at the US Open in September 2025, a moment that now marks the final shared event of their long romance.
A painful earlier chapter
Cox has spoken candidly about an earlier crisis in the relationship. On the Minnie Questions podcast in 2024, she described the shock of McDaid ending their engagement during a couples therapy session.
He just broke up within the first minute. And I was like, what? We were engaged, and I was so shocked. I was in so much pain.
She later said the period of separation taught her to set boundaries and helped her understand her emotional needs better. Cox was previously married to actor David Arquette from 1999 to 2013, and they share a daughter, Coco.
