Cologne Tatort detectives investigate prepper shelter murder in 96th case

The 96th Cologne case of the crime series Tatort, titled "Die letzten Menschen von Köln", will premiere on Sunday, 20 September 2026, at 20:15 on Das Erste and ORF 2, with streaming on ORF On. Written by Eva Zahn and Volker A. Zahn and directed by Marcus Weiler, the film brings back long-serving detectives Max Ballauf (Klaus J. Behrendt) and Freddy Schenk (Dietmar Bär). The investigation begins after vocational school teacher Linus Makris, portrayed by Bastian von Bömches, is found dead in a park with a slashed throat caused by a hunting knife. At the same time, his sister Elara Schmidtke (Katharina Schüttler) disappears into an underground survival seminar after trying to reach her brother at 4:00 in the morning.

Much of the narrative unfolds in a real Cold War civil defense shelter located beneath the Kalk Post subway station in Cologne. Built in 1979 to accommodate 2,366 people for 14 days, the facility provides the setting for a survival course managed by trainer Moritz Zechmann (Florian Stetter). During the workshop, five participants simulate the aftermath of a nuclear strike on Düsseldorf. Behrendt commented on the atmosphere inside the bunker during filming:

“A Cold War fallout shelter, with room for more than 2,000 people.”

Behrendt also described the environment as cold, dark, and oppressive, noting that supplies were designed to last two weeks before occupants would face depleted resources.

Prepper themes and precinct reactions

The production examines contemporary survivalist anxieties, referencing the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, nuclear arsenals, and ecological disaster. At the police station, precinct colleague Norbert Jütte (Roland Riebeling) conducts background inquiries on the participants, remarking on the unusual characters within the survivalist subculture. Bär commented on human reactions to existential threats:

“Man wants to live forever. And survive. Also every kind of world catastrophe.”

Bär observed that even individuals with private shelters must eventually exit and open the hatch once food and water supplies run out.

The broadcast follows the franchise's return from summer hiatus on 13 September 2026, which recorded over 7 million viewers. In the new episode, Elara Schmidtke attends the prepper workshop under her brother's name, prompting an aggressive reaction from Zechmann as Ballauf and Schenk work to uncover the victim's connections. The film will air across German and Austrian public television networks on Sunday evening.
