Human hand fragment found on outskirts of Ciechanów; police discover further remains
Residents walking a dog on Saturday evening found a decomposing hand fragment near a fence on Płocka Street. A subsequent search uncovered additional human remains a few hundred metres away.
A quiet Saturday evening
Ciechanów, a city in the Masovian Voivodeship about 100 kilometres north of Warsaw, was the scene of a grim discovery on 1 August 2026. The area where the remains were found lies on the outskirts, along Płocka Street, a road lined with residential properties that give way to overgrown, rarely visited terrain.
Discovery of the hand fragment
In the early evening, local residents were walking their dog when the animal began sniffing at something near the fence of one of the properties. There, in the bushes, they saw a fragment of a human hand. The fragment, which included fingers, was already in a state of decomposition. The walkers immediately alerted the police.
Police response and initial search
Officers from the Ciechanów District Police Headquarters arrived quickly. They secured the scene and carried out a detailed inspection. Spokesperson Sub-Inspector Magda Sakowska confirmed that the fragment was recognisable as part of a human hand. Police then launched a systematic search of the surrounding area, deploying specially trained cadaver dogs. The operation continued until late at night, when it was suspended, and resumed on Sunday morning, 2 August.
From the found fragment it can be recognised that it is a fragment of a hand. The search of the area is still ongoing.
Second discovery
On Sunday, the search teams made a further find. Approximately a few hundred metres from the initial site, in a patch of dense bushes that is normally unfrequented, officers located additional human remains. These were in an advanced state of decomposition and were accompanied by elements of clothing. The discovery was announced by Sub-Inspector Sakowska on Sunday evening.
Several hundred metres from the place where the hand fragment was found, human remains in a state of significant decomposition with elements of clothing were discovered.
Forensic examination and challenges
The remains will be transferred for forensic examination. The advanced decomposition currently prevents investigators from determining the sex, approximate age, or cause of death of the deceased. No leading hypothesis has been established regarding the identity of the person or the circumstances of death. The police have not disclosed any potential leads or suspects.
The remains will be sent for examination.
Ongoing investigation
The District Prosecutor's Office in Ciechanów is supervising the investigation. Police are continuing to search the area with cadaver dogs, checking for any additional traces that might be relevant. The investigation is in its early stages, and authorities have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
