Barcelona confirm Andreas Christensen quadriceps injury following Sevilla victory
FC Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen faces four to six weeks on the sidelines after suffering a left quadriceps muscle injury during Saturday's 3-1 win at Sevilla.
Medical tests confirm quadriceps injury
FC Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen sustained a muscle injury to the rectus femoris of his left quadriceps during Saturday's match against Sevilla FC. The 30-year-old Danish centre-back started the La Liga fixture at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, which Barcelona won 1-3. Christensen pulled up holding his left thigh in the second half and left the pitch in the 59th minute to be replaced by Gerard Martín. After leaving the field, the defender broke down in tears on the substitutes' bench. Following medical evaluations conducted on Sunday at the club's training facilities, Barcelona published an official medical statement confirming the diagnosis.
Tests carried out have confirmed that first-team player Andreas Christensen has a muscle injury in the rectus anterior of the left quadriceps. He will be out for the coming weeks and his recovery will determine his availability.
Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick had already acknowledged the severity of the problem during his post-match press conference in Seville.
There is an injury, he will be out for several weeks.
Projected recovery timeline and missed fixtures
Although Barcelona did not specify an exact date for his return, estimates from medical assessments place Christensen's recovery period between four and six weeks. A three-week international break beginning on Monday cushions the immediate impact for the club, as Barcelona do not play another domestic match until 10 October. However, the Danish national team loses a core defender for four upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Norway on 24 September, Wales on 27 September and 4 October, and Portugal on 1 October.
- Suffers left quadriceps injury in 59th minute against Sevilla
- Barcelona medical tests confirm rectus femoris muscle injury
- Misses Denmark Nations League fixture against Norway
- Misses Barcelona La Liga match against Getafe
- Misses Champions League match against Galatasaray
- Doubtful for El Clásico against Real Madrid
Upon the resumption of club competitions, Christensen is set to sit out Barcelona's home match against Getafe on 10 October, the away Champions League fixture against Galatasaray in Istanbul on 13 October, and the La Liga encounter against Real Betis at the Estadio La Cartuja on 17 October. His availability remains highly doubtful for two fixtures in late October: the Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes on 20 October, and the first El Clásico of the season against Real Madrid at the Spotify Camp Nou on 25 October.
Squad impact and Hansi Flick's defensive options
The injury halts Christensen's run in the starting lineup after he featured in seven of Barcelona's first eight matches across all competitions this season. The Danish defender signed a contract renewal in July 2026 that extended his commitment to the club until 2028, following previous campaigns disrupted by recurring muscle problems. Since arriving at Barcelona on a free transfer from Chelsea in the summer of 2022, Christensen has missed 106 competitive matches due to physical issues.
Christensen's absence forces Flick to reconsider his central defensive pairings for the upcoming autumn calendar. With Eric Garcia securing the starting right-back role, French international Jules Koundé can be shifted inside to the centre of defence to provide rotation alongside Pau Cubarsí and Gerard Martín.
