Caracal mayor Ion Doldurea resigns over health complications from car crash

Resignation and medical background

Ion Doldurea announced his resignation as mayor of Caracal on Sunday, 20 September 2026, citing health complications that prevent him from continuing his official duties. The decision follows a road collision that took place roughly six months earlier while Doldurea was traveling toward Bucharest. His vehicle was rear-ended by a truck, causing head trauma that required brain surgery to remove an intracranial blood clot. Although medical specialists advised him immediately after the operation to avoid physical exhaustion and strain, Doldurea chose to remain in office. A recent medical evaluation prompted doctors to issue a strict recommendation to eliminate stress, leading to his formal withdrawal from local administration.

Six months ago, traveling toward Bucharest, the car I was in was hit from behind by a truck. Following this road accident, I underwent brain surgery to remove a blood clot that formed from the impact. Although from the very beginning the doctors' recommendations were clear, in the sense of avoiding stress and fatigue, I chose to try, with all the associated medical risks, to continue my involvement as mayor.

Administrative handover in Caracal

Following the announcement, executive leadership of the Caracal municipality was transferred to Deputy Mayor Laurențiu Pătran. The Caracal City Hall confirmed the transfer on 20 September 2026, stating that Doldurea stepped down exclusively on medical grounds. In his departure statement, Doldurea described Pătran as a long-time collaborator in whom he has complete confidence to oversee ongoing local initiatives. Doldurea also stated that he plans to remain close to the incoming municipal leadership, providing guidance and administrative experience without holding office.

As a result of the latest recent medical evaluation, the doctors' recommendation is categorical: no stress, no emotions, no effort! For all these reasons, I decided to resign from the position of mayor of the Municipality of Caracal.

Political career and municipal projects

Before entering local politics, Doldurea worked as a chemical engineer at the tire manufacturing plant in Caracal before establishing several private commercial businesses, predominantly in the distribution of liquefied petroleum gas. He joined the leadership of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) in Caracal in 2019 and won his first mayoral term in 2020 with roughly 52.7% of the vote. In 2015, the National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives (CNSAS) requested a court determination regarding whether Doldurea had collaborated with the former communist intelligence service. During his time leading the municipality, Doldurea stated that his administration secured over €200 million in combined national and European Union funding for local modernization projects starting in 2021.

The Crevedia LPG station disaster

Doldurea's family entered national attention in August 2023 following a series of explosions at an unlicensed liquefied petroleum gas station in Crevedia, Dâmbovița County. The facility was operated by Flagas SRL, a firm controlled by the mayor's son, Ionuț Doldurea, alongside business partner Cosmin Stîngă. The disaster resulted in the deaths of between five and six people and injured more than 50 others, including dozens of emergency firefighters responding to the initial blaze. In June 2024, Romanian prosecutors formally indicted Ionuț Doldurea, Cosmin Stîngă, and Flagas SRL on charges of involuntary manslaughter, with legal proceedings ongoing and no final verdict issued. Throughout the aftermath, the former mayor maintained that he possessed no personal commercial involvement or ownership in his son's company.
