Christian Brueckner, the 49-year-old German national identified by German authorities as the prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, has publicly detailed his movements on the night of 3 May 2007. In an interview published by the Mail on Sunday, Brueckner stated that he was approximately 150 metres from the holiday apartment in Praia da Luz where the three-year-old British girl disappeared. At the time of the disappearance, her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, were dining at a tapas restaurant roughly 100 yards away. Brueckner asserted that his presence near the resort complex was tied to narcotics trafficking rather than any involvement in the child's abduction. He stated that he had driven from Spain into Portugal carrying cannabis inside his vehicle to distribute along the Algarve coast.

Police encounters and getaway attempt

According to Brueckner, Portuguese law enforcement officers stopped his vehicle three separate times on the streets of Praia da Luz during the initial search operation for the missing child. He claimed that his van was filled with marijuana, but officers conducting the searches failed to discover the illicit cargo. Brueckner said that noticing flashing emergency lights and road checkpoints across the resort prompted him to leave the area immediately to avoid apprehension for drug smuggling. He explained that he maintained public silence regarding his location for nearly two decades because he believed authorities intended to frame him for the disappearance.

Suspect status and ongoing investigations

Brueckner strongly denied any role in the disappearance and maintained that he would welcome the discovery of Madeleine alive to disprove the allegations against him. German prosecutors continue to treat the investigation as a suspected kidnapping and murder with Brueckner as the primary suspect, although investigators have not accumulated enough evidence to bring formal criminal charges. In the United Kingdom, where the case remains officially classified as a missing persons investigation, a specialized team of police officers has continued compiling evidence for the Crown Prosecution Service. British authorities have sought to establish formal charges before the 20th anniversary of the disappearance in May 2027.

Brueckner was released from prison in 2025 after serving a seven-year sentence for the 2005 rape of a 72-year-old woman at her residence in Praia da Luz. Following his release from custody, he encountered widespread hostility from local communities, which disrupted several attempts to arrange temporary housing for him. Reporting published by the Mirror noted that Brueckner lived in tents for extended periods due to public backlash and has been unable to find employment. He is currently drafting an autobiographical book to present his account of events and is seeking a publisher for the work.
