Great Britain leads Ecuador 2-0 in Davis Cup and secures fifth World Team Cup title
Arthur Fery and Toby Samuel gave Great Britain a 2-0 Davis Cup lead over Ecuador in London, while Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid won the World Team Cup in Florida.
Samuel and Fery establish Davis Cup lead in London
Toby Samuel and Arthur Fery gave Great Britain a 2-0 lead over Ecuador on the opening day of their Davis Cup qualifying tie at London's Copper Box Arena. Samuel, making his competition debut as a late replacement for the injured Cameron Norrie, dropped the first four games against Ecuador's Andres Andrade before recovering to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the opening rubber. Fery then defeated Alvaro Guillen Meza 7-5, 6-0, winning the final eight games of the match. The results leave Britain needing one victory from Sunday's three scheduled rubbers to reach the eight-team Finals in Bologna.
Team captain Leon Smith praised Samuel's response after trailing in the first set:
He did a terrific job because it's not easy. If you give a debut, maybe it's better to be away from home where the eyes are off you a little bit. Fifteen minutes and you're 0-4 down, it's not a great feeling. I think he showed great resilience.

Samuel's debut performance and squad progress
Samuel entered the tie following a climb from outside the world's top 250 to 95th in the singles rankings over nine months, including a second-round appearance at the US Open. Andrade, ranked 203rd, took the opening set 6-4 and recovered from a break down to level at 4-4 in the second set. Samuel held serve in the critical games and dominated the deciding set in 28 minutes, dropping only one game. Fery, the British number one and a Wimbledon semi-finalist, followed by closing out Guillen Meza in straight sets to consolidate the advantage.
Samuel acknowledged the pressure of representing his country for the first time:
That's definitely the most nerves I've had before a match, even more than the slams I've played.
Hewett and Reid capture fifth World Team Cup title
In Florida, Great Britain secured their fifth World Team Cup title by defeating defending champions Japan 2-1 in the final. Gordon Reid opened the tie with a 6-2, 6-2 victory against world number 21 Daisuke Arai, marking Reid's fifth win in five career meetings between the two players. Extreme heat in Orlando then forced a six-hour delay before the second singles match could proceed. World number one Tokito Oda defeated Alfie Hewett 6-4, 7-5 in a tight contest, reversing the result of their US Open final meeting one week earlier.
Reid reflected on reclaiming the championship trophy:
We're really happy to get the title back.

Deciding doubles rubber and tournament campaign
Hewett and Reid teamed up in the deciding doubles match to defeat Oda and Arai 6-1, 6-2 to secure the trophy. The victory adds to Great Britain's previous World Team Cup titles won in 2015, 2019, 2023 and 2024. Captained by Martyn Whait, the British squad also featured 21-year-old Ben Bartram, following group victories over South Korea and the Netherlands earlier in the week.
Hewett commented on the tension of the deciding match:
It's the first time it's come down to the deciding doubles for us, so I'm just really happy that we got over the line.
