Brăila Bridge lane shut for three weeks as drainage channel works begin on Danube crossing
One lane of the Brăila Bridge over the Danube is closed for three weeks starting Monday, 20 July 2026, as crews build a drainage channel on the Brăila-Jijila carriageway.
What is happening
Starting Monday, 20 July 2026, traffic on the Brăila Bridge across the Danube is restricted on the Brăila-Jijila direction. Lane 1 of DN2S, between kilometre markers 4+200 and 6+660, is closed so that a drainage channel can be built. Vehicles are being routed onto lane 2 for the duration of the work. The measure was announced by the National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration (CNAIR) and the Regional Directorate of Roads and Bridges (DRDP) Buzău.
After the completion of works and the opening of traffic on carriageway 2 of the Brăila Danube bridge, starting with 20.07.2026, traffic on DN2S, lane 1, carriageway 1 (Brăila-Jijila direction), between km 4+200 and km 6+660, will be restricted for the execution of the drainage channel.
The restriction will stay in place until 10 August 2026, a period of three weeks. The same authorities had previously completed work on carriageway 2 and reopened it, shifting the construction focus to the opposite side.

Safety advice for drivers
Both CNAIR and DRDP Buzău have issued a set of recommendations for motorists passing through the work zone. Drivers are asked to reduce speed, obey temporary road signs, and follow the directions of personnel managing traffic. They should also keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, as congestion is likely, and avoid sudden manoeuvres. The full advisory, posted on social media, reads:
Reduce speed in the work area and respect temporary signage, keep distance from the vehicle in front, as traffic may be heavy, pay attention to road signs and staff directing traffic, and avoid sudden manoeuvres and adapt your driving style to the conditions in the construction site.
About the Brăila Bridge
The Brăila Bridge was inaugurated in the summer of 2023 and is the largest suspension bridge built in Romania. It is also the third largest of its kind in Europe and the last bridge over the Danube before the river flows into the Black Sea. The structure is approximately 2 kilometres long and provides drivers with an alternative to the ferry crossing, offering a direct road link towards the Black Sea coast.
Since its opening, the bridge has drawn attention for repeated asphalt damage that required repairs. According to reports, the bridge has not yet been formally received by Romanian authorities, partly because of those surface issues and because a connecting road on the Tulcea bank remains unfinished.
