The Brazilian men's national volleyball team secured the 2026 South American Championship title on 20 September 2026 by defeating Argentina 3-0 in Rio de Janeiro. Playing in front of their home supporters at the Maracanazinho arena, the Brazilian squad posted set scores of 25-20, 25-23, and 25-20 to finish the decisive round-robin fixture. Outside hitter Adriano Xavier closed out the match by serving an ace on the final point. Opposite hitter Darlan Souza led the hosts with 23 points in the match, guiding the attack throughout the three sets. Over the course of the six-team competition held from 15 to 20 September, Brazil did not drop a single set, completing consecutive 3-0 victories against Chile, Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, and Argentina. The sweep delivered Brazil its 34th continental title and recovered form following a tenth-place finish in the Volleyball Nations League.

Tensions and altercations at the net

The conclusion of the match was met with immediate confrontation between both rosters at the net. Following the final point, Darlan walked toward the Argentine side of the court and waved a farewell gesture. Argentine players responded angrily, crossing over to the Brazilian side as verbal arguments escalated into physical scuffles. Brazilian outside hitter Ricardo Lucarelli entered the confrontation, while match referees and Brazilian head coach Bernardo Rezende stepped between the teams to separate the players and restore order. Social media video clips of the confrontation circulated widely following the trophy ceremony. Darlan defended his conduct in post-match interviews, stating that the Argentine team had repeatedly engaged in demonstrative celebrations and provocations after scoring points during the third set.

In the third set we had a good moment, they started provoking, that is their style of play, but I think we were very resilient.

Continental titles and Olympic qualification

The championship victory returned Brazil to the top tier of South American volleyball after losing the continental final to Argentina in 2023. That 2023 defeat had interrupted a 56-year stretch in which Brazil captured 28 consecutive South American tournament titles dating back to 1967. By winning the 2026 tournament, Brazil earned a direct qualification berth for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Brazil joins host nation the United States, alongside Japan and Cuba, among the four teams with confirmed places in the 2028 Olympic men's tournament. Brazil will compete in both Olympic volleyball divisions in Los Angeles, as the Brazilian women's national team also won the 2026 South American Championship. Argentina will need to pursue Olympic qualification through remaining qualifying pathways.

Standings, global berths, and individual honors

Brazil topped the final standings with a 5-0 record, followed by Argentina in second place with a 4-1 record and 12 points, and Chile in third place with a 3-2 record and 9 points. These three podium finishers earned qualification for the 2027 World Championship, which will be hosted in Poland. Brazilian players collected five individual awards for the tournament, with Ricardo Lucarelli named Most Valuable Player. Darlan Souza was selected as best attacker, Adriano Xavier as best outside hitter, Flavio Gualberto as best middle blocker, and Fernando Kreling as best setter. Argentina took two individual honors, awarded to middle blocker Agustin Loser and libero Franco Massimino, while Chile's Noe Aravena Castro received the remaining outside hitter award.
