Construction progress

The renovation of the Santiago Bernabéu station on Madrid Metro Line 10 has passed 70% of execution, according to the metro operator. EL PAÍS, in its own report, puts progress at 77%, a figure the other articles do not repeat. The station opened in 1982 as Lima and took the name Santiago Bernabéu in 1997. The 66 million euro project is due in the first quarter of 2027, timed to the 80th anniversary of the stadium and the 125th anniversary of Real Madrid. Works are in the final phase of civil engineering, after the cavern of the old station was demolished and folded into the new design.

The main concourse, intermediate levels and several connecting galleries to the platforms are already finished. Carlos Zorita, who heads infrastructure and stations at Metro de Madrid, described the progress.

“We have already built the intermediate level of the station and are now finishing its connections with the platforms through galleries.”

Fitting of electromechanical, lighting and communications systems has also started. That phase will allow the finishing surfaces to follow.

Line 10 service

The Nuevos Ministerios and Cuzco stretch has been closed since 28 March. The Madrid regional transport department says it will reopen at the end of December, without naming a specific day when asked by EL PAÍS. Trains will run through the station without stopping at Bernabéu until its renovation ends, so passengers on this stretch will pass it. Free replacement buses run in the meantime at intervals of three to five minutes to Plaza de Castilla. EL PAÍS also reports that the Plaza Castilla to Cuzco section reopened on 25 August after closing on 4 July for the same project.

Capacity and accessibility

The renovation will triple the station's surface, from 4,843 square metres to more than 12,400, according to EL PAÍS. The plan adds 12 lifts and 24 escalators, and the station will be fully accessible to people with reduced mobility. Four of the lifts linking the street with the concourse are already installed, Zorita said. The main concourse will give views of the intermediate levels and arriving trains, and the design aims to shorten routes between the access points and the platforms. Two entrances will connect to the stadium, and a third will serve the Azca financial district.

Passenger demand

The station recorded nearly four million entries in 2025. On days with matches and other events that draw large crowds, passenger numbers went above 34,000. La Razón says the two stadium entrances are meant to handle large crowds on event days. The design is aimed at those peaks, with the renovated station due to open in the first quarter of 2027.
