Deutsche Bahn suspends direct Berlin-Paris ICE train over Alstom technical faults

Suspension made public

Deutsche Bahn (DB) has suspended the direct ICE high-speed train service between Berlin and Paris due to technical problems with the European Train Control System (ETCS) supplied by French rail manufacturer Alstom. A DB spokesperson confirmed to AFP on Friday, 7 August 2026, that the direct ICE connection Berlin-Frankfurt-Paris was "not fully available" at present. The suspension reportedly took effect at the end of July but was only made public on 7 August, when Berlin-based newspaper Tagesspiegel first reported the story. Handelsblatt, Süddeutsche Zeitung, N-tv and several French outlets including Le Monde, Le Figaro and Ouest France followed with their own coverage throughout the day.

The federally owned company stated that DB is demanding Alstom correct the faults without delay.

“The reason is technical problems with the European train control system of the company Alstom.”

Alstom stated it is working intensively to "restore the connection as quickly as possible." No date for the resumption of service has been announced by either company. The suspension affects what German media describe as one of DB's most popular international long-distance connections, running between the two capitals via Frankfurt.

Passenger impact

Passengers who booked the direct route have been notified through the DB Navigator app and by email that they must now change trains in Frankfurt am Main or Mannheim. The direct journey takes approximately eight hours. According to Tagesspiegel, the difference in total travel time when a connection is required is small, but passengers generally prefer direct trains to avoid the risk of missing a connecting service in the event of delays, which have become increasingly common across Germany's rail network.

N-tv reported that DB did not publicly announce the removal of the train from its schedule. The outlet described the provisional end of what it called the "prestige train" as having been communicated only to affected passengers through the app and email notifications, rather than through a public announcement.

Route history and occupancy

The direct Berlin-Paris ICE connection was inaugurated in December 2024, less than two years before the suspension. According to Tagesspiegel, the route has proved popular, with average occupancy running at around 80 percent. The service connects the German and French capitals via Frankfurt, offering a direct rail alternative to air travel between the two cities.

Technical background

Alstom is equipping DB's trains on the route with technology for the digital ETCS train control system. The technical problems with this system are the cause of the suspension. DB has called on Alstom to resolve the faults immediately, but neither company has provided a timeline for when the direct service might resume. Passengers are left to rely on connecting services through Frankfurt or Mannheim for the foreseeable future, with no indication of when the direct ICE between the two capitals will return to the timetable.
