German grid operator Mitnetz logs over 10,000 battery storage applications
Eastern Germany's largest grid operator Mitnetz Strom has received over 10,000 battery storage connection requests since January 2026, driven by a looming 2029 deadline for a 20-year grid fee waiver.
Influx of grid connection filings
Eastern Germany's largest power grid operator, Mitnetz Strom, is experiencing a sharp rise in registration applications for new battery storage systems. Between January and mid-September 2026, the Kabelsketal-based distribution network operator recorded more than 10,000 connection requests across its service territory. The company released the figures following an inquiry by the Deutsche Presse-Agentur. Managing director Lutz Eckenroth described the rapid influx of connection filings as a "tsunami" of applications. The volume of incoming requests reflects expanding activity in energy storage development among both private residential consumers and commercial energy firms seeking grid integration.
Capacity concentrated in utility-scale systems
While numerical counts are heavily weighted toward small units, commercial and industrial installations account for almost the entire volume of electrical capacity requested. Out of the more than 10,000 total filings logged through mid-September 2026, higher-capacity projects exceeding one megawatt represent just under 650 applications. Despite making up only a small fraction of overall project counts, these roughly 650 utility-scale systems account for nearly 97 percent of the total electrical power capacity registered with the operator. Eckenroth described the current commercial momentum around large-scale battery facilities as a "gold rush atmosphere." In some instances, project developers have capitalized on the demand by securing grid connection reservations with the explicit purpose of reselling those rights to other commercial parties.

Exemption deadline drives developer acceleration
The surge in applications is primarily driven by the upcoming expiration of a regulatory incentive for battery storage operators. Under current German statutory rules, energy storage facilities that are commissioned and brought into commercial operation by 2029 receive a 20-year exemption from paying grid connection and transmission fees (Netzentgelte). Because this 20-year waiver substantially improves project economics over two decades of operation, investors and developers are seeking to establish grid connection eligibility before the legal window closes. To secure the 20-year exemption before the 2029 deadline, Eckenroth noted that investors in newly planned storage projects must step on the gas to finalize planning and grid integration.
Industry discussions at Leipzig energy forum
The operational role and economic impact of battery storage systems within the ongoing energy transition are central topics at the East German Energy Forum (Ostdeutsches Energieforum) in Leipzig. Energy sector executives, grid engineers, and political policymakers attending the event are examining how regional networks can accommodate the rapid expansion of electrical storage assets. Battery storage is treated as a functional technology for balancing intermittent generation from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. As eastern Germany's largest distribution system operator, Mitnetz Strom manages regional power distribution infrastructure, making its application numbers a direct measure of regional energy investment. The forum in Leipzig continues to address the technical and regulatory adjustments needed as new storage capacity approaches the grid.
