
Austria shatters national heat record as Vienna hits 41.0°C, red alerts issued
The temperature at Vienna-Stammersdorf reached 41.0°C on Tuesday, surpassing the previous national high of 40.5°C set in 2013, as a red heat alert covers eastern regions and low Danube levels disrupt shipping.
Record-breaking heat
Austria registered its highest temperature ever recorded on Tuesday, 4 August 2026, when the Vienna-Stammersdorf weather station reached 41.0°C in the afternoon. Stammersdorf had been the first station past 40°C at 13:30 and climbed through the afternoon, according to GeoSphere Austria data. The reading surpassed the previous national record of 40.5°C set on 8 August 2013 at Bad Deutsch-Altenburg in the east of the country. Vienna's own city record had been set only the day before, at 40.1°C, and was beaten by Tuesday midday. Lower Austria also broke its state record, with 40.7°C at Langenlebarn at about 15:30. By 16:00 nine stations had recorded 40°C or more, which the Tauernwetter service said had never happened on a single day in Austria, and St. Pölten passed 40°C for the first time since records began there. The new peak came on the second day of an intense heatwave that forecasters said would reach its maximum between Tuesday and Wednesday. The previous record had stood for nearly 13 years.
Wider heatwave and drought
The record is the latest milestone in an exceptionally hot and dry summer. Austria had already experienced its longest June heatwave on record, with temperatures averaging 1.4°C above previous highs for the month. July was also marked by widespread drought and rainfall deficits reaching 90% in some areas, according to GeoSphere Austria. The heat has accelerated natural cycles: apricot ripening began roughly 20 days earlier than the 1961-1991 average, a shift scientists link to human-caused climate change.

Impact on infrastructure and nature
The prolonged heat and lack of rain have pushed the Danube River to historically low levels, comparable to the extreme lows of 2003 and 2018. Freight shipping has been almost completely halted, and river cruise operations are severely curtailed. Port freight traffic and electricity production from river-power plants have also declined, affecting Vienna's economy. The low water has heightened fire risk in the Lobau, a Danube floodplain used as a recreation area.
Fire risk and emergency response
A forest fire is burning in the state of Burgenland, where some roads have been closed. In Vienna's Lobau district, a major firefighting operation was underway, with a helicopter deployed to combat the blaze. Police advised residents to gather essential belongings, though no formal evacuation order had been issued by Tuesday afternoon. The highest fire danger level was declared for the Lobau area, and red heat alerts (the maximum warning level) were in effect for Vienna, the Weinviertel, northern Burgenland including Seewinkel, the Vienna Basin, and the city of St. Pölten through Wednesday.
Climate context
Scientists attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events to greenhouse gas emissions from human activities. The Austrian heat record is part of a broader pattern of temperature extremes across Europe this summer.

Nasir Dis, a 60-year-old restaurant owner in Vienna, described the conditions as a catastrophe, noting that customers are staying indoors rather than dining out.
