August streaming slate brings 'Ted Lasso' return, the 'Cien años de soledad' finale, and a wave of new fiction

The headliners

Apple TV+ will release the fourth season of 'Ted Lasso' on Wednesday, 5 August, three years after its last instalment. Jason Sudeikis returns as the relentlessly optimistic coach, this time tasked with managing a women's second-division football team. The cast also reunites Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, and Juno Temple.

Netflix counters on the same day with the second and final part of 'Cien años de soledad', the adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez's novel. The seven-episode arc will cover the remaining 50 years of Macondo and the Buendía family, from the breakdown of Colonel Aureliano Buendía's peace to the town's decay. A special concluding chapter directed by Laura Mora will arrive on Wednesday, 26 August.

Disney+ enters the week with 'The Shards' on Thursday, 6 August. The FX production, adapted from Bret Easton Ellis's novel and overseen by Ryan Murphy, is set in 1980s Los Angeles. It follows a teenage aspiring writer whose life unravels when a mysterious classmate appears as a serial killer terrorises the city.

Franchise returns and new genre entries

The superhero genre lands on HBO Max with 'Linternas', a series that pairs an ageing intergalactic agent (Kyle Chandler) with a new recruit (Aaron Pierre) to investigate a murder in the American Midwest. Damon Lindelof, who previously steered 'Watchmen', serves as showrunner. The week also sees the third season of Taylor Sheridan's 'Lioness' arrive on SkyShowtime on Monday, 3 August, with Zoe Saldaña and Nicole Kidman leading eight new espionage episodes. Prime Video will premiere 'Sterling Point', a coming-of-age drama created by Megan Park and set on a Canadian island, on 5 August.

Spanish-language productions

Two Spanish titles bookend the month. 'Muertos S.L.', the comedy set in a funeral home, will air its final season in August. The series, created by the Caballero brothers and starring Carlos Areces, has run for four seasons. Later, on Friday, 28 August, Netflix debuts 'Toda la verdad de mis mentiras', a five-episode miniseries adapted from Elísabet Benavent's novels about a trip among friends that unearths secrets.

The wider slate

Science fiction and animation also feature. 'Futurama' returns for its fourteenth season on Disney+ on Monday, 3 August. The second season of 'Materia oscura', a quantum-thriller with Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, closes the month on Apple TV+ on 28 August. Ricky Gervais's animated series 'Gatos callejeros' premieres on Netflix on 7 August, and the final season of 'Outer Banks' streams on 20 August. On 28 August, the Robert De Niro-led crime drama 'Susurran tu nombre' also arrives on Netflix.
