Man in his 30s arrested after woman in her 80s found dead at rural Waterford home
Gardaí have arrested a man in his 30s after the body of a woman in her 80s was discovered at a house in Ardsallagh, west Waterford, on Monday afternoon.
Discovery and initial response
Gardaí were alerted shortly after 2pm on Monday, 15 June, to the discovery of a woman's body at a residential property in the rural townland of Ardsallagh, near Youghal Bridge on the Cork-Waterford border. The woman, believed to be in her 80s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The area was immediately sealed off and preserved for a forensic examination by the Garda Technical Bureau, whose services have been requested.
Arrest and search activity
A man in his 30s was arrested on Tuesday and is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda station in the South Eastern Region. On Monday night, gardaí set up checkpoints on access roads around Ardsallagh while searching for an individual they believed was connected to the case. Motorists were stopped and asked to report anyone seen seeking a lift or walking across fields. One source told the Irish Independent that the individual of interest may have been known to the deceased woman.
Investigation structure
A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the inquiry, and an incident room has been established at Dungarvan Garda station. A family liaison officer is supporting the woman's relatives. Gardaí have begun door-to-door inquiries and are checking whether neighbouring properties have CCTV cameras that might help identify who called to the house, which sits at the end of a cul-de-sac.
Postmortem and next steps
The local coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified. A postmortem examination is scheduled to be carried out at University Hospital Waterford, and gardaí have stated that its results will determine the course of the investigation. Detectives are keeping an open mind about the nature of the death, and it is not yet known when the woman died, though there are fears she may have been dead for some time before the discovery.
Community reaction and witness appeal
Sinn Féin TD for Waterford Conor D McGuinness described the situation as "deeply sad and upsetting" and appealed for anyone with information to contact gardaí.
My thoughts this evening are with the woman who has died, and with her family, friends and neighbours as they come to terms with this loss.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses who were in the Ardsallagh or Youghal Bridge areas in recent days to come forward. Road users with camera footage, including dashcam recordings, are also urged to contact Dungarvan Garda station on (058) 848600 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
