Polish hospitals billed 300,000 PLN for a single day of neurosurgery, triggering fraud probe

The billing scheme

On 10 January 2025, a doctor from the medical company "Spine" performed 73 neurosurgical procedures at the Municipal Hospital in Miastko, according to medical documentation and data from the provincial consultant. The company's contract entitled it to 65 percent of the NFZ contract rate per procedure. For 12 hours of work, it invoiced the hospital 300,000 PLN, equivalent to 26,000 PLN per hour.

The creation of fictitious hospital documentation served only to defraud NFZ funds.

Mogilno hospital fined

The same company operated at the hospital in Mogilno, where the former director signed the contract. NFZ completed an audit in May 2026, found irregularities, and imposed a fine of over 2.6 million PLN. The hospital now lacks funds to pay July salaries.

According to NFZ, they reported a procedure four times more expensive: one they would not have been able to perform in such a short time.

Financial scale

The amounts involved range from the daily billing in Miastko to the estimated fraud at one hospital, which the provincial consultant put at nearly 13 million PLN.

Miastko hospital's deepening crisis

The Miastko hospital has long struggled with liquidity. It recently suspended another ward, and its debts have reached 40 million PLN. Over recent years, the facility has cycled through ten presidents. Doctors have demanded millions in overdue wages.

Investigation and timeline

The National Health Fund and the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau are investigating under prosecutorial supervision. Key events span from the procedures in January 2025 to the current revelations.
