German journalist Eva Maria Michelmann released after five months in Syrian prison
Eva Maria Michelmann, a German journalist from Cologne, returned to Germany on Friday after five months in Syrian custody, where she was held without charge and subjected to torture. Her release follows months of diplomatic efforts by Berlin and a public campaign by her family.

Khaled al-Halabi, a former Syrian brigade general who ran a notorious intelligence prison in Raqqa, appeared in a Vienna court on Monday charged with torture and sexual coercion of 21 civilians between 2011 and 2013.
