Romania restarts coal units at Rovinari plant to tackle energy deficit and high import costs

Complexul Energetic Oltenia brought three coal units back online at Rovinari on 17 August 2026 as drought and the shutdown of both Cernavoda nuclear reactors pushed daily peak import costs up to 500 euros per megawatt-hour.
