Alexander Zverev advanced to the US Open round of 16 after defeating Chile's Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets with a 6:2, 7:6 (7:2), 6:2 scoreline in Arthur Ashe Stadium. The third-round match began late at 22:35 local time after an earlier women's fixture between American Iva Jovic and Alexandra Eala of the Philippines extended past three hours. Zverev finished the contest at 1:09 local time after two hours and 25 minutes of play, converting his second match point. The relatively brief match provided physical relief for the 29-year-old French Open champion, who had spent a combined nine hours and 25 minutes on court during five-set struggles in his opening two rounds against opponents including Quentin Halys. Those prior night sessions had concluded at 1:55 and 2:15 respectively.

Court performance and second-set pushback

The 1.98-meter German took control immediately in the opening set, breaking Tabilo twice to establish a 3:0 advantage inside the first 15 minutes. Zverev secured the opening set in 38 minutes, winning every point when landing his first serve into the court. Tabilo, ranked 28th in the world, faced early trouble again in the second set after dropping serve to trail 1:2. Chilean supporters in the upper tiers of Arthur Ashe Stadium sought to rally him with chants of "Chi-Chi-Chi-Le-Le-Le, Viva Chile". Zverev soon faltered on his serve with a double fault, allowing Tabilo to break back and eventually create two set points. Zverev saved both set points before dominating the tiebreak 7-2 as Tabilo committed multiple unforced errors.

Former Wimbledon champion Boris Becker had expressed concern regarding Zverev's physical endurance on Sporteurope.tv prior to the third-round encounter.

He is fit, but everyone has a limit somewhere, and that is significantly longer than for the other contenders.

Zverev displayed renewed frustration in the third set over unforced backhand errors, hurling his racket against the wall behind the baseline, but he regained control to break Tabilo twice and close out the victory.

Left-handed opponent streak and draw changes

The result marked Zverev's 16th consecutive match victory against left-handed opponents on the ATP Tour. To prepare for the matchup, Zverev conducted a practice session several hours before the contest with his older brother Mischa Zverev, who is also left-handed. The victory coincided with notable eliminations across his side of the tournament bracket on Saturday. American Taylor Fritz and French Open finalist Flavio Cobolli of Italy both exited the tournament, following the earlier eliminations of third-seeded Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime and Novak Djokovic, while world number one Jannik Sinner remains absent due to injury.

Fourth-round matchup against Luciano Darderi

By defeating Tabilo, Zverev became the only men's singles player this season to advance to the round of 16 at all four Grand Slam tournaments. He will play his fourth-round match on Monday against Italy's Luciano Darderi, the tournament's 21st seed and world number 22. Darderi previously defeated Zverev on clay at the Rome Masters earlier this season, though Zverev enters the upcoming fixture as the highest-ranked competitor remaining in his half of the draw.
