Zelensky dismisses Ukraine's US ambassador Olga Stefanichyna as Kyiv pushes for Patriot missiles
The dismissal of Olga Stefanichyna, expected after a government reshuffle, comes as Ukraine urgently requests new Patriot missiles from Washington and amid reports of an anti-corruption investigation into the diplomat.
Sudden dismissal
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday dismissed the country's ambassador to the United States, Olga Stefanichyna, by a decree published on the presidential website. The terse text read: "Dismissal of Olga Stefanichyna from her duties as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the United States." The move had been expected since the government reshuffle in July, but it still landed at a sensitive moment, as Kyiv is pressing Washington for additional Patriot air-defense systems to counter Russian missile strikes.
Ambassador's response
Stefanichyna, who had held the post since July 2025, described the move as a personal decision. In a Facebook post, she wrote:
It is a personal decision, motivated by personal circumstances.
She also published a letter requesting to be relieved of her duties. In her message, she took credit for having "increased American arms deliveries and maintained this support precisely at a time when the political climate in Washington was shifting against Ukraine." Before her ambassadorship, she served as deputy prime minister and justice minister.
Anti-corruption probe
Ukrainian media outlets reported that Stefanichyna is the subject of an investigation by the country's anti-corruption agency on suspicion of embezzlement, though she has not yet been formally charged. The decree did not mention the investigation, and Zelensky has not named a successor.
Crucial role in weapons supply
The ambassadorship in Washington is a linchpin for Ukraine's war effort. The country relies on American arms deliveries and intelligence sharing to sustain its defense against Russia. Stefanichyna had been involved in difficult negotiations over a planned agreement on the exploitation of Ukrainian minerals. Her dismissal came just days after Zelensky visited the White House to personally request new Patriot missiles, as Russia intensifies its aerial bombardment.
Trump's warming tone
The personnel change unfolded against a backdrop of improving, if still fragile, relations between Zelensky and US President Donald Trump. The two leaders have had tense and sometimes stormy exchanges, but Trump recently offered encouraging words to the Ukrainian leader. Zelensky's White House visit the previous week was seen as a sign of a thaw.
Broader diplomatic reshuffle
The decree removing Stefanichyna was part of a wider rotation of Ukrainian diplomats. Ambassadors to Singapore, Austria, and Tunisia are also being replaced, according to the presidential website. Vadim Omelchenko remains ambassador to France, but Viktoria Lialina-Boiko was appointed to head the Ukrainian representation to UNESCO in Paris.
