Zelensky calls Putin 'Patient Zero' at UN as Kremlin rejects peace talks

Address to the General Assembly

President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, calling Russian President Vladimir Putin a danger to international stability who cannot live without conflict. Zelensky urged global leaders to intervene decisively, warning that Moscow would not be satisfied with territorial gains in the Donetsk region and would target additional cities. He stated that Russian forces have launched over 2,100 missiles against Ukraine, including more than 950 ballistic missiles, alongside hourly strikes with jet-propelled Shahed drones. Referring to remarks by US President Donald Trump, Zelensky noted that international consensus opposes the war, leaving the Russian leadership isolated in its continuation of hostilities.

He is Patient Zero, the one from whom this idea of war continues to spread and who, wherever he reaches, brings only pain, instability, new risks and, of course, new crises.

Russian battlefield casualties and recruitment

Zelensky presented figures on Russian operational losses, stating that Moscow suffered between 248,960 and 248,964 casualties from January to August 2026. He noted that Ukraine maintains a verified archive of drone footage documenting these losses in combat zones across the eastern front. According to the Ukrainian president, Russian forces captured just over 1,000 square kilometres of territory this year, representing a cost of roughly 248 soldiers per square kilometre, though Ukrainian forces have since recaptured a significant portion. Zelensky also stated that the Russian military has recruited soldiers from 47 countries, calling on those foreign governments to prevent their citizens from being drawn into the conflict.

Economic pressure and diplomatic outreach

Zelensky called on international partners to halt commercial exchanges with Moscow, arguing that trade revenues allow the Kremlin to reject diplomatic negotiations. He pointed to Russia's elevated budget deficit and referenced statements regarding challenges within the Russian oil industry as evidence of economic pressure taking effect. Addressing broader diplomacy, Zelensky noted the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to the United States for talks at the White House, remarking that Beijing holds substantial influence over Moscow and could assist in ending the war. At the Crimea Platform summit on the sidelines of the assembly, Zelensky added that Ukraine is prepared to ensure maritime safety and grain transport in the Black Sea if Russia agrees to de-escalate, following proposals presented by Egypt, India, and Turkey.

Kremlin position and regional security

Prior to Zelensky's speech, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that conditions for peace negotiations do not exist, accusing Western nations of escalating the conflict through continued arms supplies. Peskov criticized European governments, specifically naming the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, while dismissing proposals for temporary pauses in fighting as empty rhetoric. The diplomatic friction was accompanied by a security incident on NATO's eastern flank, where a Russian military helicopter entered Polish airspace from Kaliningrad for 42 seconds, travelling approximately 300 metres into Poland. Meanwhile, Zelensky confirmed positive discussions with Donald Trump regarding potential licensing agreements to manufacture Patriot air defence interceptors directly in Ukraine.
