Zappeion festival canceled hours before premiere as stage is dismantled after public outcry and permit questions
Hours before its opening night, the Festival of Olympia at Athens' iconic Zappeion Megaron was canceled and the 1,000-seat outdoor amphitheater is being dismantled, following a wave of public criticism over the metal structure's aesthetics and questions about its permits.
What was planned
The Festival of Olympia, organized by the Committee of Olympia and Zappeion Bequest, was set to open on 21 June 2026 with the concert "Swinging with the Big Band" on World Music Day. A 1,000-seat open-air amphitheater had been erected in the Zappeion garden, directly in front of the iconic neoclassical façade. The program was scheduled to run until 26 June, though some reports mentioned an extension through 25 July.
The theater will remain in place for about a month.
Public backlash
Images of the metal structure circulated widely on social media, drawing sharp criticism from residents and heritage experts. Many objected to the obstruction of the Zappeion’s view and the use of green public space in the city center. The negative reaction focused both on the aesthetic impact and on the fact that the installation had been erected without visible prior consultation.
The permit question
According to reports, any event held outside the Zappeion requires approval from the Central Council of Modern Monuments at the Ministry of Culture, a step that was never taken for this festival. The Zappeion, supervised by the Ministry of National Economy and Finance, is a listed building and bequest, making the absence of such authorization a key point in the controversy.
The cancellation
Late on the evening of 20 June, the Committee announced the festival's postponement. The official statement cited "technical reasons concerning the Zappeion site."
