Dell's New XPS 13 Challenges MacBook Neo with $599 Student Price and Premium Features

Dell revives its iconic XPS 13 as a thin, lightweight, and aggressively priced laptop aimed squarely at Apple's MacBook Neo, with a student promo that matches its rival's sticker price but adds a sharper screen and backlit keyboard.

Dell strikes back

Dell has officially revived the XPS 13, positioning it as a direct rival to Apple’s MacBook Neo. Announced ahead of Computex 2026, the new ultraportable borrows many cues from Apple’s budget laptop, even matching its $599 promotional student price — though Dell’s regular pricing climbs to $699. The XPS 13 represents Dell’s most aggressive attempt yet to capture the affordable premium market that Apple disrupted with the Neo.

Design and display

At 12.7mm thick and 2.2 pounds, the XPS 13 is both thinner and lighter than the MacBook Neo (2.7 lbs). It features an all-aluminum CNC chassis, a 13.4-inch anti-glare touchscreen with 2560x1600 resolution and a 30–120Hz variable refresh rate — advantages over the Neo’s 60Hz panel. The display covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color space and peaks at 500 nits of brightness. The backlit keyboard and Windows Hello facial recognition are further differentiators, though the XPS 13 lacks a 3.5mm headphone jack, relying entirely on its two USB-C (3.2 Gen 2) ports, which are conveniently placed on opposite sides. Future configurations will support Thunderbolt 4 and Kensington lock slots. Two color options — storm and sky — will be available.

Under the hood

The entry-level model ships with an Intel Core 5 320 “Wildcat Lake” chip, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage (though The Verge reports a 512GB base drive). Dell claims up to 17 hours of streaming battery life. Higher-tier configurations will offer Intel Core Ultra “Panther Lake” processors, up to 32GB of RAM, and 1TB SSDs. While the base 8GB of RAM on Windows 11 is a point of contention — mirroring the Neo’s own limitation — the option to scale up addresses one key criticism of Apple’s capped specs. Unlike the fanless Neo, the XPS 13 uses a dual-fan active cooling design, which Engadget notes could be an advantage when working outdoors in direct sunlight.

Pricing and market push

Dell’s student pricing of $599 directly mirrors the MacBook Neo’s standard price, but Apple offers an additional $100 education discount, bringing the Neo to $499. Dell’s $599 promo runs only until September as a back-to-school offer; afterward, students will pay the standard $699. The student discount applies to high schoolers over 16 and degree‑granting college students.

The bigger picture

The XPS 13’s debut signals that PC makers are finally learning from the Neo’s successful formula: premium build quality doesn’t have to come with a premium price. Dell COO Jeff Clarke explicitly named the MacBook Neo in briefings, acknowledging the competition. The company also teased a future XPS with discrete NVIDIA RTX graphics and an OLED display, aiming to challenge MacBook Pro models. For now, the XPS 13’s combination of a sharper display, light weight, and competitive pricing makes it the most credible Windows alternative to Apple’s budget laptop.
