The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) presented 46-year-old Xavi Hernandez as the new head coach of the Netherlands men's national team on Tuesday in Zeist. The former Barcelona manager signed a four-year contract running through the 2030 World Cup, succeeding Ronald Koeman following the team's elimination by Morocco in the round of 32 on penalties. KNVB technical director Nigel de Jong explained that the federation evaluated a four-man shortlist based on tactical profile, quality, and availability. The federation first contacted Pep Guardiola, who chose to take a sabbatical year after leaving Manchester City. KNVB then turned to Arne Slot, who preferred to continue in club management after leaving Liverpool in late May, while Netherlands under-21 manager Michael Reiziger remained a candidate throughout the search. Xavi acknowledged his position on the shortlist during his official presentation.

Tactical identity and squad criteria
Xavi becomes the first foreign manager to lead the Netherlands national team since Austrian coach Ernst Happel at the 1978 World Cup. During the press conference, Xavi stressed a return to attacking principles inspired by Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels. He stated that the team will abandon the five-defender system used under Koeman, opting instead for a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation to control matches through possession. De Jong noted that conservative tactical choices at Euro 2024 and the recent World Cup fell short of expectations, requiring a more assertive playing style. Xavi also clarified that player call-ups will be based entirely on quality rather than the league in which players compete, citing the Eredivisie, Premier League, La Liga, and Saudi Pro League.

Former Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal sent a recorded telephone message welcoming Xavi to the national coaching post. Preparations for Germany fixture
Xavi will announce his first Netherlands squad in mid-September ahead of his debut match on 24 September 2026. The Netherlands will open its UEFA Nations League campaign against Germany at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam. Germany also enters the match under new leadership, with Jürgen Klopp having replaced Julian Nagelsmann following Germany's World Cup exit. Xavi described facing Klopp's Germany as an immediate test against one of Europe's top teams, adding that his staff will prepare the squad to compete directly.
