Cottbus win 3-1 on 2. Bundesliga return but coach Wollitz says display showed no second-division quality

A winning return after 12 years

FC Energie Cottbus celebrated their return to the 2. Fußball-Bundesliga after a 12-year absence with a 3-1 opening-day victory over Hannover 96. Tolcay Cigerci scored twice, once from a free kick and once from a penalty, and Justin Butler added a third from a corner. The result gave the Brandenburg club a winning start on their return to the second tier, but the manner of the performance left head coach Claus-Dieter Wollitz deeply dissatisfied.

Wollitz's scathing verdict

The 61-year-old coach criticised his team sharply despite the three points, saying the display fell far short of what second-division football demands. He told Sky that his side showed neither courage nor build-up play, and expanded on that assessment after the final whistle.

We stand here and say: we want attacking football, we want courageous football. None of that is visible. You should show a somewhat different approach if you believe you have to play in the second division.

Wollitz argued that Cottbus had not created a single scoring chance in 95 minutes and that the problem was not attitude but quality. He said Hannover 96 should have been the only team to win the match, and that Cottbus prevailed only because the visitors squandered their opportunities and goalkeeper Marcel Lotka delivered an outstanding performance.

If you don't create a single scoring chance in 95 minutes, then you know you have a problem. Then you know it's not about attitude. It's about quality. This is not a justification to play in the 2. Bundesliga, the way we played football today.

Demands for more intensity and new signings

Wollitz accused his players of lacking intensity and physicality, demanding more resistance and "more fuel." The team improved only after halftime and several substitutions, when the Brandenburg side began to find their way into the match. Before the season, the coach had announced he would not deviate from his commitment to attacking football, but the opening performance contradicted that promise.

To go out and proclaim: we want to play this way and want to play this way and play this way, and it's simply not visible, now it's about finding the players or getting them on the pitch who can do that or at least behave differently.

Wollitz let it be understood that he would welcome additional new signings before the transfer window closes, as he searches for players capable of delivering the style he has promised. The coach's frustration, coming after a winning return to the second division, sets a demanding tone for the season ahead at the Stadion der Freundschaft.
