German authorities launched a manhunt for convicted investment fraudster Hendrik Holt after the 36-year-old failed to return from an approved unescorted furlough on 25 August 2026. Holt was serving his sentence in open custody near Berlin, an arrangement that allowed him to leave the facility during the day because his official residence was registered in the capital. He failed to check back into the JVA Heidering correctional facility on Tuesday evening, prompting judicial authorities to alert police. Following his disappearance, both the prison administration and the public prosecution office in Osnabrück received written messages from Holt's circle stating that he had no intention of returning. Public prosecutor Martin Schanz confirmed that investigators are treating the disappearance as an intentional escape, while reports noted that Holt's wife Jana also vanished alongside a child and an infant.
Facts are now available on the basis of which an escape must be assumed.
Shortly after authorities initiated search measures, a post appeared on an Instagram account associated with Holt displaying a photo with a caption sending greetings from Moscow and praising the local caviar.

Fabricated wind energy projects
Holt, originally from Haselünne in Lower Saxony's Emsland district, was arrested in April 2020 at the Hotel Adlon in Berlin following an investigation into phantom energy assets. In 2022, the Osnabrück Regional Court sentenced him across several proceedings to a total term of nearly nine years for commercial gang fraud, bribery, and document forgery. Holt, who had once presented himself as an energy industry wunderkind, confessed during the trial to offering completely invented wind park developments to international utility groups. The scheme defrauded three state-owned foreign energy companies of approximately 10 million euros. Several members of Holt's family and the former financial director of the Holt Group received prison sentences for their roles in forging documentation and processing payments. The court proceedings also established that Holt had bribed foreign diplomats to obtain a diplomatic passport to shield himself from prosecution.
Scrutiny over the Rostock airport purchase
The disappearance coincided with an ongoing review by Osnabrück prosecutors into allegations of continuing financial misconduct during Holt's incarceration. The public prosecution confirmed the receipt of a criminal fraud complaint naming Holt and two other individuals in connection with the purchase of Rostock-Laage Airport. Under a mid-2025 transaction, the firm Crisp Partners agreed to acquire the regional transport hub for 3.1 million euros, proposing the installation of large-scale solar power arrays across the airport grounds. Investigations indicated that Holt allegedly helped steer the acquisition from prison through intermediaries, appearing at a negotiation meeting between buyers and sellers last year where he presented himself as a key figure behind the transaction.
