Gironde wildfire encroaches on Bordeaux, defense and space sites under protection as blaze reaches 42,000 hectares

Fire progression

The wildfire ignited on Wednesday 22 July at Saumos, in the western part of the Gironde department. By Sunday 26 July, it had already consumed 42,000 hectares of pine forest and was advancing toward the southwestern edge of the Bordeaux metropolitan area, propelled by winds. Early on Monday 27 July, the prefecture reported that the fire front was approximately 15 km from the city of Bordeaux.

Strategic sites exposed

The western Bordeaux region is home to a dense cluster of defense, aerospace, and scientific installations, many of them nestled within pine forests. ArianeGroup, the prime contractor for France's strategic missiles and space launchers, has four sites in the area. Two are in Saint-Médard-en-Jalles, a commune that has been evacuated, and specialize in loading solid propellant, a highly flammable material, into M51 ballistic missiles. A third site, in the also-evacuated commune of Le Haillan, produces engines for the Ariane 6 launcher. Roxel France, a subsidiary of MBDA that builds missile motors, also has a facility in Saint-Médard. Nearby are sites belonging to Dassault, Safran, and Thales. Further south, in the evacuated commune of Le Barp, the CEA (French Atomic Energy Commission) operates a sensitive research center. All these locations are now exposed to the advancing flames.

Firebreaks and official response

During the night of Saturday 25 July, authorities launched earthmoving and engineering works around several sensitive sites. The goal was to strip away all vegetation and create firebreaks that would deny the fire any fuel.

Prefect Brocas also commended the mobilization of construction companies that contributed to the effort. The Ministry of the Armed Forces confirmed that "experts and means" had been deployed to ensure the security of industrial sites.

Evacuations and ongoing threat

The communes of Saint-Médard-en-Jalles, Le Haillan, and Le Barp have all been evacuated as the fire approached. Firefighters are concentrating their efforts on these strategic perimeters, digging additional firebreaks and positioning resources to defend the facilities. The fire, described by officials as exceptional, continues to burn out of control, and shifting winds could further complicate containment.
