White supremacist march on US 250th anniversary met with free speech defense from Trump official
Several hundred masked members of the white supremacist group Patriot Front marched through Washington D.C. on July 4, the 250th anniversary of US independence, chanting 'Reclaim America!' as the Trump administration defended their right to free speech.
The march
About 400 masked members of the white supremacist group Patriot Front paraded through Washington D.C. on Saturday, the 250th anniversary of US independence. Dressed in khaki pants, blue polo shirts, caps, and white face masks, they gathered at Union Station in the morning and marched toward Capitol Hill. Some waved Confederate flags, others carried the Patriot Front emblem or upside-down American flags. They chanted slogans including "Reclaim America!" and "Life, liberty, victory!" Around noon, the group boarded Metro trains and exited at New Carrollton, Maryland, in the northeastern suburbs. Police reported no arrests or complaints, stating there is a right to peaceful protest.
Official response
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, speaking to CNN, said he disagreed with every position the group advocates but emphasized that free speech is a founding principle of American democracy.
Burgum added that someone can run for office calling themselves a communist, even though the nation fought against communism, and that such incidents are exceptions. He praised the unity around the country and flag during the celebrations.There are many things I see that I personally find offensive and unacceptable. But in America, free speech is allowed.
Group background
Patriot Front was founded in 2017 by Thomas Rousseau, drawing members from the neo-Nazi group Vanguard America after the violent Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, where one counter-protester died and dozens were injured. The Institute for Strategic Dialogue labels it a neofascist hate group seeking a white American identity. The group cultivates a patriotic image, using symbols like the Betsy Ross flag, while members conceal their identities behind white masks and sunglasses. Only Rousseau appears recognizable in public. Its manifesto states:
In June 2022, about 30 members were arrested in Idaho near a Pride event on suspicion of planning riots. That same year, a black man was attacked during a Patriot Front march in Boston. The group is monitored by US security services, and previous marches have involved only a few dozen members.Democracy has failed this once great nation. A radical reset is needed to return to the traditions and virtues of our ancestors.
A day of celebration and tension
The march unfolded amid a day of national festivities that included military flyovers with dozens of latest-generation aircraft over the National Mall, school ships and helicopters from around the world in New York's Hudson Bay, and a large fair on the Mall. Extreme heat forced the cancellation of some events and the closure of the MAGA-inspired fair.
