A birthday celebration with a diplomatic surprise

President Donald Trump marked his 80th birthday on Sunday with a two-part event that mixed high diplomacy and cage fighting. Earlier in the day, he announced from the White House a preliminary agreement to end the war with Iran and lift the American blockade.

“The deal is already complete.”

The promise, if finalised, could ease high oil prices, but officials cautioned that weeks of detailed negotiation lay ahead.

The White House transforms into an MMA arena

As night fell, the historic South Lawn became the venue for UFC Freedom 250, a professional mixed martial arts card. Over 4,000 invited guests sat under a towering metal arch called "The Claw," which rose 28 metres over an illuminated octagon. Among them were Secretary of State Marco Rubio, FBI Director Kash Patel, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and Poland's President Karol Nawrocki. Fighters prepared in the adjacent Eisenhower Executive Office Building and marched to the cage while U.S. soldiers stood at attention. The sound system boomed against the Truman Balcony as the crowd roared.

Gaethje triumphs in a bloody headline bout

Justin Gaethje, a 37-year-old American known for his brawling style, defeated Spain's Ilia Topuria in the lightweight title fight when Topuria's corner stopped the contest after a punishing fourth round. Referee Marc Goddard signalled the end, despite Topuria's protests.

“No, no, no, we finish the fight.”

Gaethje celebrated with a reference to the nation's founding:

“I'm from America; 250 years ago we were way bigger than six-to-one dogs.”

Trump and UFC CEO Dana White then entered the cage for a fireworks finale.

Undercard and an Ellipse watch party

Earlier, on the Ellipse lawn between the White House and the Washington Monument, an overflow crowd of 85,000 followed the action on giant screens. Hockey brothers Matthew and Brady Tkachuk entertained the masses, with Matthew predicting early knockouts across the card. Middleweight Bo Nickal knocked out Kyle Daukaus in one round, calling it 

“maybe the greatest experience of my life.”

A brief disturbance occurred when UFC champion Sean Strickland appeared and was escorted away by park police. The event weather survived dark clouds and heavy rain threats, with the area avoiding storms.

Ethical questions and the $60 million spectacle

The night's blend of politics and private business raised conflict-of-interest concerns. Trump owns shares in TKO Group, the parent company of the UFC, and critics argued the event provided a promotional platform for Dana White at public expense. Spanish media reported the production cost exceeded $60 million. The White House did not comment on potential ethics violations, but the event stood as an unprecedented fusion of presidential pomp with commercial spectacle.
