White House launches immigration-themed games

On 3 September 2026, the White House published a collection of six browser-based arcade games on its official website. The titles adapt mechanics and visual styles from classic video games to promote the administration's border security policies and political branding. One title, "Build the Wall", tasks players with stacking falling geometric blocks to construct a barrier along the southern border. Unlike standard block-stacking puzzles, completing a horizontal line does not clear the blocks from the playfield; instead, the wall expands upward and outward to obstruct what the game text describes as an approaching "zombie horde".

Another title, "Rio Run", replicates the mechanics of the retro game Snake. In "Rio Run", players navigate a digital version of US border official Tom Homan across the screen to apprehend and deport people crossing the Rio Grande from Mexico. A third title in the arcade invites users to catch falling sacks of currency with nets to supply a fund designated as the "Trump account". Additional titles in the collection mimic visual assets from other established gaming properties, including mobile title Flappy Bird, Microsoft's Xbox division, and Japanese company Sega, whose trademark font and logo were altered to spell out the political slogan "MAGA".

Intellectual property dispute

The release prompted a public rebuke from The Tetris Company, the entity holding the intellectual property rights to the puzzle franchise. On 4 September 2026, the company posted statements across its social media channels on X and Instagram, confirming that it had no involvement in the development or publication of "Build the Wall". A spokesperson confirmed to AFP that the company never authorized or licensed its brand, trademarks, or copyrighted game concepts for the White House portal.

“At Tetris we believe in the power of connection and bringing people together.”

The company noted that for more than 40 years, Tetris has aimed to connect audiences across cultures and generations through purposeful line-clearing play. Emphasizing that it takes intellectual property infringement very seriously, the company stated that it is currently reviewing the White House release for potential copyright violations.

Institutional reactions and border policy

When questioned about the arcade, the White House defended the initiative, citing a focus on innovation and winning. A government spokesperson told AFP that the platform was designed to communicate presidential policy accomplishments through mediums that resonate with ordinary citizens. The administration did not provide an immediate response regarding licensing queries, while Microsoft did not issue a reply to press inquiries and Sega Corporation was unreachable.

Human rights organizations criticized the online games, arguing that portraying border crossers as video game targets and zombies dehumanizes vulnerable populations. The arcade aligns with Donald Trump's broader immigration enforcement strategy, in which US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) plays a central operational role. Construction of the physical border barrier, first mandated during Trump's 2017–2021 presidential term to span between San Diego, California, and the Gulf of Mexico, remains underway, with federal officials aiming to complete the barrier by late 2027.
