Werder Bremen beat Augsburg 3-2 after Mitchell Weiser scores stoppage-time winner

Second-half turnaround at Weserstadion

Werder Bremen recovered from a two-goal deficit on matchday 4 of the Bundesliga season to defeat FC Augsburg 3-2 on Saturday. The visiting side had taken control of the scoreline through an 18th-minute strike by Robin Fellhauer and a 58th-minute finish from Calvin Brackelmann. Bremen had earlier generated opportunities, including a sixth-minute free kick from Chuki pushed onto the post by Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen and a 42nd-minute header from Niclas Füllkrug. Following tactical advice from former manager Thomas Schaaf during the halftime broadcast, Bremen increased attacking pressure in the second half. Marco Grüll initiated the comeback in the 66th minute by reducing the deficit before Füllkrug equalized in the 86th minute.

Weiser decisive after 14-month absence

The match concluded with a decisive strike in the second minute of stoppage time by Mitchell Weiser. The 32-year-old winger, who previously played for Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen, made his first home appearance since suffering a torn cruciate ligament in July 2025. After missing the entire preceding season and playing brief minutes away against Cologne a week earlier, Weiser entered as a substitute in the second half. In the 92nd minute, he curled a shot into the top right corner of the net past Dahmen to establish the final 3-2 scoreline.

Weiser reflected on his return and the support received during his rehabilitation period after the final whistle.

“What can I say? This is indescribable and really feels like a dream. It is something special and I appreciate it very much: all the messages sent to me over time. The boys who always support me here. The coach who made this possible for me. I am really glad I was able to give something back today. I am very grateful for that.”

Werder head coach Daniel Thioune praised the veteran player's determination during training and match play.

“Mitchell Weiser putting that in: for all football romantics, welcome to the Weserstadion! That was crazy. It triggered an unbelievable amount of emotion in us.”

Füllkrug scoring run and league standings

The equalizer by Füllkrug represented his third goal across his last three Bundesliga matches for Bremen. The 33-year-old forward returned to the club in the summer following transfers to Borussia Dortmund for 17.25 million euros, West Ham United, and AC Milan. Füllkrug scored from the edge of the penalty area after midfielder Youri Regeer anticipated the strike during the buildup. Managing director Clemens Fritz noted during the transfer that Füllkrug brought leadership and quality to the squad, while professional football director Peter Niemeyer commended the team's persistence after halftime.

Füllkrug addressed the home crowd's contribution to the late turnaround following the match.

“The second half is simply Weserstadion and Werder Bremen. The team left their heart on the pitch. That is the only thing the fans here want to see, and then you ignite the stadium. We can all be proud of this team. We are truly allowed to spread some joy now.”

The victory brought Werder Bremen to seven points from four matches, moving level with Augsburg in the Bundesliga standings and handing Manuel Baum's team their first loss of the league campaign.
