Chelsea sign 35-year-old Danny Welbeck from Brighton in £5m deal, breaking youth-focused transfer policy

Chelsea have signed veteran striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion for a reported £5m fee, handing the 35-year-old a two-year contract. The former Manchester United and Arsenal forward will travel directly to Hong Kong to link up with head coach Xabi Alonso and his new team-mates on their pre-season tour.

It is the first time the club have paid a transfer fee for a player over the age of 26 since signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona in 2022, when the striker was 33. Career path

Welbeck began his career at Manchester United, breaking into the first team in 2008 and winning the Premier League title, two League Cups and the Club World Cup under Alex Ferguson. He joined Arsenal in 2014 for £16m, scoring 32 goals in 126 appearances across all competitions in five years, and won the FA Cup there. After a single season at Watford, he moved to Brighton in 2020. Over six years on the south coast, he became the club's all-time leading top-flight goalscorer, recording 51 goals and 18 assists. He made more than 200 appearances for the Seagulls and scored 26 Premier League goals across his final two campaigns.

International experience

Welbeck earned 42 caps for England, scoring 16 times during an eight-year international career. His last cap came in 2018, and he was overlooked for Thomas Tuchel's 2026 World Cup squad. He brings Champions League experience and two World Cup campaigns to Stamford Bridge.

What it means for Chelsea's squad

Welbeck is the latest in a line of players to move from Brighton to Chelsea, following Joao Pedro, Moises Caicedo, Robert Sanchez and Marc Cucurella, who has since joined Real Madrid. His arrival raises questions about the futures of fellow forwards Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu. Joao Pedro is regarded as the first-choice option. Chelsea have spent heavily this window, acquiring Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a British record £117m, Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for £52m, and Marco Palestra from Atalanta for £43m. Chelsea begin the new Premier League campaign at Fulham on August 24.
